Noticed that my filter indicator gauge was about 1/4 of the way down so I decided to pop the lid and take a look see. Noticed the stock filter has some kind of cotton like stuff on the bottom. Anyone know why it's there and what does it do? Is it that restrictive to make my gauge read the way it is? Just curious.

yup, i had that too.

best i can guess is that it is a precleaner. keeps the big debris out of the pleated part of the filter. it was also good for collecting the oily residue from the diesel exhaust. i just wiped mine off with some mineral spirits every 4000 mi till it was replaced.

i moved up recently to the amsoil dry filter. we will see how that works long term.

Had my mechanic tell me that this pre filter is a POS. When I pulled the filter, it appeared that the pre was clogged but the actual filter was still about 70% good. Mechanic confirmed this. He did however tell me that D/C was voiding warranties on aftermarket filters, saying they didn't seal properly. After reading threads on this forum, I would say the the OEM filter has the same problem. Appears to be air box design more than anything.

Looks like it's a good thing I know a good dealer. I know there's always something better than oem. OEM is just a short word for "cheap, but works" imo. I don't have major mods planned, but since inj seem to be a big issue on our rigs, when I can, I'm gonna swap them out for some 90hp DD inj, same with the intake, ordered a AFE torque tube and AFE replacement filter. Gonna add a Silent Might muffler and Roktech timing advancer. This thing really moves out well, love the power! I got the 4. 10, and want a little lower rpm, so a Gear Vendors is on the list also. And if I dare, Superchips!

#2, I fixed the oily residue problem on the bottom of the air filter by ziptying a thick sock doubled over, to the vent tube. Change every oil change. Gives you something to do with those socks that have holes.
