Yes, Greenleaf is talking about taking the tapered cone out altogether. I ran my 91 with the line unhooked, and still outran some V8s in town.

ALso, no smoke is good- that means you are getting complete combustion. I have had guys tell me that a healthy diesel will smoke. I have a feedlot full of that, too. At $3 a gallon or more, you dont need to waste any fuel- and smoke is just that, wasted fuel and money. BTW- WHEN was this mechanic certified? Before or after 1973?

Some smoke isnt BAD, but neither is a lack of it. In fact, with my new injectors, my 92. 5 doesnt hardly smoke unless I get on it at 30 in 4th gear.

20psi peak boost is in teh neighborhood for a stock engine. As long as it runs good, and you are happy with it, leave it be. But, more power is never a bad thing.

got my pyro installed and whoa! i was seeing 22psi when i got in higher gears and 1300-1400 deg at wot on the pyro gauge!! the collar on the fuel screw is missing! i guess the previous owner tweaked it a lil. i backed it out half a turn and still saw high egt's. whats safe for short bursts and sustained driving?

Dont be fooled by the lack of a fuel scre wcollar- my 91 didnt have one either, and when I got the pump on aonther truck rebuilt, the shop took the screw off. Leave the screw where it is- backing it out can affect your idle, and now that you have gauges, you can monitor it and back out of it when necessary.

Max EGT for short bursts is hotly debated- some go as high as 1800 on the track; I limit mine to around 1500 for no more than 10sec. Back off the fuelling, and it comes down FAST!! My thinking is, if you hit that high EGT consistenetly, you need more air. Some disagree.

SUSTAINED- I'd go no more than 1250, due to the cooling system (in the engine) not being designed to dissipate more heat than that. If you are slowly climbing in EGT, and hit 1300 for 1/2i before the top, you shouldnt hurt anything.

Also, let your turbo cool down to <350deg (preferrably 300, but if it is a hot summer day, and you've been sitting there 2minutes, shutting her down at 340 wont hurt anything. ) Dont shut it off at 500 like my g/f's boss does in his 02 PSD.

i messed with the fuel screw and got my egt's to be at about 1400 at wot. i had to adjust my idle a lil but no problems for me. yea, i think i need a goot exhaust and a better turbo, the only mods i have are ve pump tweaks and a bhaf.

I would turn the fuel cone to the "richest" setting. This will increase bottom end and overall fueling. Plus you don't have to mess with turning the idle down. You can adjust how much smoke you get with the screw on top of the AFC housing. I probably took at least 3 seconds off of my 0-60 times on my 1990. If you can't get the smoke down to where you like you can always take the couple minutes and turn it down some.
I'm interested in the fuel cone mods. Is the fuel cone adjusted using the star wheel? And is there a good write-up on this somewhere?

You can adjust the fuel cone sort of with the star wheel but the way I was referring to was pulling it out and reindexing it so the deepest part is where the pin rides. When You pull it out you will see where it is worn in the factory setting. All you do is turn it to where the pin hits the deepest part and slap it back together. Then you can use the screw on top to fine tune the smoke and low boost fueling.

Out on the screw= less fuel before boost

In on the screw = more fuel before boost
