my thoughts exactly... I wouldnt mind a DD -

The noise is only when clutch pushed in, right? I mean you can take transmission out of gear and let clutch out and it should be quiet, from what I hear.

Right when the clutch pedal is let out it quiets down. It just has a really unnerving sound when pedal is depressed. It just wasn't what I was expecting after forking over $1800. 00 bucks.

I'll see if I can get a video up tomorrow. Actually the newer DD's are much quieter than the older units. Peter tightened up the clearances between the flywheel and the center/floater plate.

One of guys here in MNTDR has a DD clutch, or so I'm told and I've never noticed one peep of racket noise from his truck on the dyno day's.

The problem is it isn't just when the clutch pedal is depressed but the whole time it is depressed. Wether it be 2 seconds or 5 mins waiting at the order window at macdonalds. If I sit with the truck out of gear it sounds like the transmission is about to rattle apart. So I always leave the clutch depressed when waiting. Its pretty bad when someone pulls up next to you at the stop light ,and laughs because your clutch sounds like its trying to destroy its self.

Dual Discs are a man's clutch for sure. The noise and rattling is just signaling to others that you have a lot of power.

My neighbors came out on their patios to see what all the racket was the first few times I came home and parked in the car port. They all loved me in the morning at 5:30, too.

Whimpy 'lil me decided to go back to a single, for now. I think my new sticks, CP3, and a desire to pull next season will bring me back over to the dark (er... LOUD) side.

On edit:

At idle in neutral with the clutch out you will hear the input shaft rattling. It can be quite loud. The Fluidampr will take care of about 80% of the noise. Also you'll hear the transmission gears talking, particularly at high load or low rpm as there's no dampening for the torsional spikes created by the mighty Cummins. The Fluidampr helps with about 50% of that noise.

The noise with the clutch in is caused by the clutch discs rubbing the floating plate. Nothing will cure that AFAIK.

I've heard three trucks with DD's, a Hasley DD set up and 2 SB set up's and they are loud period! One thing for sure the pedal pressure is crazy! One truck that had a SB in it was at a friends house and I had just gotten off work and dropped in to see how the walbro kit fit and sounded compared to the FASS and they asked me to jump in and start it and I went to push the clutch in and boy was I suprised! :--) I like my OFE just fine! :-laf

Not to steal the thread, but in response to what was said before. Mine makes a noise pretty similar to when it's pushed in while in 4th gear and loading it up, until I get to about 1750-2000 rpm or so. Is this normal. It just started doing it within the last 1000 miles or so, I have about 5000 on it so far. Thanks,

Ryan

I'm still waiting for something new and better to come along. I hope its only a matter of time to have a clutch that will handle the ocosional slead pull but still have good street manners(quiet, quick shifts, not too grabby)

Am I waiting for something that will never come or do you think there will be something in the horizon????

If not it seems like I will have to go with a SBC 3850

I think you may be waiting quite some time... Look at what was the next step, I was a 3-disc clutch. SO whats after that? 4?

I am hoping at some point, clutches will go like muscle cars - One minutes they are carb'ed and loud and nasty, next minute they are 1100hp EFI motors that idle perfect and have A/C to boot :)

There will never be a single disc clutch that will hold up to sled pulling.

Horsepower ratings for clutches mean nothing when it comes to sledpulling.

Actually, I would like to here it... I've never been around one before.

Listen when you are next to an 18 wheeler. Some of those clutches make plenty on noise. 1 of our 4 trucks does. The others are pretty quiet.

Don't know if you still can get them, but at least on the big trucks, you could get anti-rattle clips for that very reason. Most, if not all, big truck clutches are dual disk.

I suppose the solution would be to come up with a way to make the DD clutch discs have springs like a single.

The problem I see is a huge increase in rotating mass (resulting in slow shifting) and also the need for adding a spacer between the motor and trans to accomodate the extra room needed for two sprung discs. I believe that's what SB did to get the triple disc to fit.

aren't most double disk setups for gassers actually smaller disks vs a single?

If I recall correctly, A buddy with a Talon went from a single 10" disk to dual 7" disks or something like that.

What about pucked and spung singled with a 4200# plate?

They don't like to be slipped (to build boost). They, uhm,,, what's the word,,, Melt?

My Dual disc os load. Hang out at the 1/4 mile track and listen to the manual transmission cars running 600+HP. Just be gald you don't have to run striaght cut gears with your Dual Disc.

I LOVE My DUAL DISC. It is awesome to bring it up to redline, step on the brake, and ride the clutch untill 15Lbs of boost, and just lift off the clutch and look back to see all four duals lit up in 4th gear.

so you have 4 friction surfaces where a single has 2. With as single, you just have to move twice as fast. :)
