Installing Juice with attitude

I just got my latest oil sample back and the soot/solids numbers are up by quite a bit. It's higher then even those samples with way more miles on the oil. By the trends I would be surprised if this was just a fluke in the testing but time will tell. I still have one old one left that I will put on at my next oil change probably around 50 or 60k miles.

The mileage figures below are miles on oil.

27,800 miles 0. 66/EaBP100

76,535 miles 0. 10/BP100

52,839 miles 0. 09/BP100

25,900 miles 0. 06/BP100

What are you using for a full flow filter and how often are you changing it? Driving habits and mods affect this greatly. before I added my mods the oil would stay clean until around 15k miles now it shows at about 5k. I sample and change the full flow every 5k miles and change oil and bypass filter at 30k miles regaurdless of sample readings.

Driving habits and mods have been the same for more than 200k miles and probably 10 oil samples or more. I run the Fleetgaurd LF3894 stratapore filter and change it every 25k, which has been working just fine (I know some will freak out over that but when running a bypass it works fine for me). The soot numbers only changed since the new bypass filter was installed so it has to be the filter or a screw up at the lab. I saw one other guy post about this filter and he said his oil turned black sooner so I'm not alone. I have a light foot and don't blow big clouds of smoke all the time.

That's exactly what I'm saying. Just compare the top sample with new Ea filter to the three lower samples with the old BE-100 filter. The only change there is the filter media. All samples are from the same lab and driving and mods are all the same throughout. It will be interesting to see if the numbers come back down like I think they will once I start running the one old filter I have left over but that will be a while.

I fully agree... I ran a single BE90 and it did A LOT BETTER than two EaBP100s.

I originally thought it was a faulty filter, but now #2 is doing it as well.

Mine is completely visual comparison. The BE90 kept the oil VISIBLY cleaner than these newer BP100s. And for soot, that is significant.

I have thought about that but I can't be changing filters every few days as I'm running over the road and put on about 10k miles/month. If Amsoil doesn't do something about this I might have to find an alternative spin-on. TP would be a good choice for me I think if I was just running around back home like I used to be. This is really odd as they tout this filter as being a soot removal device, which they didn't specifically mention on the old filter, as I remember, yet it seems to do a worse job.

Exactly... when I travel, I'd be stopping every day to change the filter...

I might consider another brand of TP filter, only larger.

Don't you think there just may be a relation between your bad oil samples and the new ultra low sulfur fuel we are all having to use??

The newer fuel should produce less soot from what I have read???

Get the big one. The MotorGuard LF-750. Element changes every 30,000 miles. A modified roll of TP and paper towels.

I would put it in Amsoils lap and let them figure it out, don't like equipment that dosen't work regardless of who makes it, and I'm a Amsoil dealer. So I know how highly this filter is advertised and I am very curious why this is not doing what they say it should.

I did email them so I'm waiting to see what they have to say after the weekend.

This is interesting I have put my last B100 on about a month ago and I too only change it at 30k miles as this is where I do a complete oil change. But it will be about a year and a half before I get there. Hopefully amsoil figures this out by then but I have 1 EA filter on the shelf already.

Y-knot had the right idea. ULSD may be the cause of the high soot levels. When the sulfur levels dropped from 500 ppm to 15 ppm this decreased the NOx emissions. In doing so, it increased the EGR rates. Increased EGR results in less efficient combustion and raises the levels of soot that finds its way into the engine oil.

I'd like to also hear what Amsoil Tech has to say.

I have a Amsoil bypass sitting in the garage, due to other posts like this. I'm not gonna install it until Amsoil fixes the problem.

I don't remember having an EGR system on my 2nd Gen? I thought that was 3rd Gen.

Gentelmen,

You have to remember, you are looking at soot/solids % weight in the used oil samples! 0. 66 is NOT VERY MUCH SOOT at all! My last one was 0. 20 soot/solids, and the one before that was 0. 50. IF you ever get a sample report back that shows 3. 0 or higher, then you need to be concerned! Your 0. 66 is way below that!
