Not happy with new Amsoil bypass filter

Amsoil is the only oil company that openly allows extended oil drains. That promotes it on their website. The only one I would use for extended drains.



I believe I could rely on safe dino oil drains every 7 thousand miles. The Amsoil may be a tiny bit better for the coldest months here in Texas but up north I would run some kind of synthetic at least during the winter.



And no Wayne, I don't think he gets it..... or is trying hard not to!!!









Lets see. Guessing 7k mile oil changes w/dino@11quarts per change. So 36 oil changes x 11 = 396 quarts or 99 gallons of oil that needs to be recycled.



Amsoil extended drains at the same mileage(I'm only going to 100k but 254k is very possible) 13 quarts fill up and say the same filter changes as dino so 36 oil filters with one quart per change. Then the bypass gets changed every 25k with another quart going in for 12 more quarts. Thats 13 + 36 + 12 = 61 quarts. Even if the dino truck adds no oil in between changes the extended truck will so I will add say 10 quarts to the total.



So with the dino you used 99 gallons that needs to be recycled. With Amsoil you have the 36 + 12 filter changes so 12 gallons to be recycled. In Texas the side benefits are minimal with the lack of cold weather. In the north its a no brainer.



Plus I get to spend all that extra time with my wife instead dirty oil.

And as noted in other threads, the oil is slowly changed throughout it's life... by adding makeup oil... you act like I'm some sort of complete idiot, as you tend to make others out to be as well... run that oil without adding any oil and see how the detergents are holding up then...

You're right, about 1 quart each time the filter is changed every 10,000 miles, so I guess after 100,000 it's almost a complete change, except that there's always a certain percentage of old oil that doesn't get drained out, and about half the makeup oil was added more than 50,000 miles ago. . . ;)

Yes, you are correct in saying the oil is slowly changed over time. In my case, the oil filters (both by-pass and full-flow) were changed 3 times in 105,000 miles (based on oil analysis) when the oil was completely drained. I did add 12 quarts of oil in that time frame, which still tested by oil analysis was still in good shape! ALL this was done over a 7 year period of time.



In my case I wanted to go to the HDD 5W-30, so that is why I changed it out at 105,000 miles. The 5W-30 was still in the truck at 150,000 when it was sold.



And NO I DO NOT THINK YOU ARE AN IDIOT, so let's keep it clean here. :D

Wayne, I have enough of the 15-40 oil for at least another 100 thousand miles so I can't just change but I am curious how the truck took to changing from the 15-40 to that lighter oil. Did you notice any mileage improvement and how did the engine respond? Did the engine burn any more oil with the lighter oil?

After I installed the 5W-30 HDD, I did see about 1 MPG increase, but it was not consistant. The engine seemed to run the same as with the 15W-40, but the oil pressure came up much quicker when it was cold with the 5W-30. There is more cost with the HDD 5W-30, but I realy didn't care as I was getting it for wholesale.



If I were living in very cold climates, I would definately opt for the 5W-30, but in climates above 0 deg. F. I would use the 15W-40, which I now use in my 03' CTD.

Here is an update since I just got my latest sample and the soot numbers are down considerable from the previous sample. The top one is my newest sample with the bottom being the oldest. The bottom three still show lower numbers with the old filter but the newest one is down some so that's nice. I know the differences are small and there can be some error in the testing but it's still interesting to look at.
