Traded in the 2010 ,3500 and got a used, 2014 , 2500 Laramie, I live in the country and went to Sacramento, Rocklin, Roseville area about one hour away. So when I was going to head for home I wanted to use the Nav. My normal route would have been, take the freeway system and 45 minutes later I would be home. But not today, arteriole roads for the first 10 or so miles and then county roads then dirt roads and such, over a hour and 35 minutes later I was home ? Boy I know the area and now I have no confidence to use it the GPS if I was out of town and pulling a trailer. I tried to go to the settings and see if it was programmable for routes, I have used a Tom-Tom and Garmin a lot for work, so I know a little about the GPSs. Truck has 18000 miles and had 15000 when I got it. No idea of any updates were performed. Love the truck but hate the TMS and now the GPS. Will make a dealer visit to check for up-dates and try to change the TMS so I can run 60 psig in the rear tires without the warning lights.

Do you have a choice for "shortest route" or "quickest time"? I know that selecting "shortest route" will often take you over some goat paths that you'll regret - been there, done that and got the t-shirt!

Not that I could find ? That is why I said I had a little GPS knowledge, I looked for that one , Thanks anyway at least we are trying !

On the 730N system I have, the "shortest route" or "quickest time" selection is described on page 187 of THIS MANUAL. My Garmins had a similar option - I would think the system in your truck would as well buried somewhere down in the menus.

Also see pages 188 - 189 to change the default routing method.

Rusty, Thanks, I read the pages you listed and went out to the truck and tried. It is a little different but it helped a lot.

You must live north or N/E of Sacramento out in the rice fields. Not too many dirt roads left in either direction that are not private farm or ranch roads. I more or less grew up in Sutter Co and the surrounding area so I'm pretty familiar with the area.

Anyway, I think GPS is great for hiking and hunting off trail or making way points on my favorite fishing lakes and rivers. Other than that, I rely on the very thing that has worked without flaw for many, many years; printed maps.

I'm in rural central Ca now and own a motel. So many guest use their GPS to find our place and end up 3 miles down the road, even though they have literally passed it up and miraculously missed my giant billboard on the highway that clearly states "Ahead on left". All of these smart tech gadgets are making us stupid.

I was using mine yesterday in central Ca. and the screen was locking up while I was still getting voice commands. Happened a couple times on the same route and I finally gave up and just listened to the commands rather than diverting my attention to this contraption. Don't know if there is a reset for the screen but did not see one. Seems to be accurate so far on getting me there by the shortest route and right to the address. Although I did go thru some roads that have not seen maintenance in many a year. Interesting journey and I learned there are many smaller solar farms in the valley than I even imagined. Must be a new crop that does not require water.
