Help... ... My 2004 2500/SLT/QC/LWB/AUTO 31000+ miles and is not shifting. Sometimes it will hold first gear and not shift until I let up on the throttle, other wise it will hold first forever. This is a hit and miss thing and will go a week without any problems and other times it will act up 5 or 6 times in a row. I had the transmission serviced at 15,000 miles at the dealer and they said everything looked fine. Anyone else have this happen to them? As always thanks for any and all help in this matter.

You're going to have to take it back to the dealer. Of course, it won't act up when they get it, so you might actually have to wait for it to grenade itself before taking it in.

Do you happen to notice any flickering or otherwise odd behavior of the shift indicator when this happens?

It sounds like a bad transducer or solenoid. If it is intermitting it is tough to get the dealer to acknowledge a problem until it just quits. Depends on your dealer and how receptive they are to user input.

The techs service the trans and say "everything looks good". Like they could see a bad electronic component or, for most of them, know when it is bad.

Thanks Guys... my Dealer is real easy to work with as a mater a fact I would have to say they are the BEST Dealer I have ever dealt with. The service manager told me he would order a valve body and also talk to DC. I just wanted to see if anyone else had the same problem. Thanks for the replies.

Don :)

My '03 does the same thing, temp is at 150-160, do you feel any resistance on the throttle pedal? Mine feels stiffer than normal at same time trans is not wanting to shift.

Kvic, your truck has a throttle pressure cable that sounds like it is sticky or hanging if you are feeling resistance. The 04. 5 and up trucks no longer have a cable as the throttle pressure is controlled by the PCM. Disconnect your throttle pressure cable from the linkage and check the cable for smooth movement. If there is any resistance in the movement or fraying at the ends replace it.

The cable you are refering to, is that the same one that goes from the pedal to the assembly with the return spring and possibly cruise control? If so the only time there is any abnormal resistance is when the trans is at operating temps, and in gear, only with the engine running. I checked ease of movement with engine off and with engine on, resistance feels the same.

Thanks Kvic

YES this is exactly when it happens. I told John the service manager that it almost feels like the throttle cable or peddle is sticking when it doesn’t shift. When you push down on the throttle do you feel almost like a clicking feeling? Mine goes in this Monday for a valve body replacement. Do you have a LWB or SWB Truck? I have a LWB and it also has a howling noise coming from the rear somewhere. :(

I have a shortbed truck. How did you convince the dealership, or how did they figure it out, that it was/is the valvebody?

Kris

My truck is staying in first untill I hit 3200 rpm then it shifts right into third. I changed the transducer and transmission speed sensor but no luck so far.

Don, are you taking it to Charlie's Dodge?

Kvic, in addition to the cable from the pedal you should have another cable that runs to the transmission that will control the throttle pressure. It should be mounted in the same area as the throttle cable but not sure on the 03's where they routed it. It is possible it is the VB kicking pressure back intot he throttle valve and causing the stiffness, just never heard of that problem or description before.

The Service Manger; John called me on Monday and said he ran into this on a 05 and it was the valve body so he ordered it. There were no codes stored so with the description of what was going on he said he was going to swap out the VB. I have to say that my Dealer Al Smith in Bowling Green, Ohio is the most customer friendly Dealer I have ever dealt with. Every Dealer I have ever gone to in the past for service would tell you “your vehicle is ready come and pick it up” then when you ask what did you find they would say “could not duplicate customer complaint” or “No problem found” translation, they didn’t do a DARN THING . But why is it when I drive out of the Dealership it does the exact thing that I took it in for? I took my DW’s Jeep in for rough idle and trans. temp. light and was told first that they could not find anything wrong, so I dragged the SM out to the parking lot showed him the Jeep and sure enough the TT light was on and the radio ant. was shaking so bad it looked like it was waving at you. He kept it 2 more days and this time when I picked it up he told me that “Your vehicle meets all parameters set by the Manufacture” what the he!! is that? I can see why the big three have lost so many customers to the Imports; we can’t get the Dealers to just fix our vehicles when we bring them in. Sorry for the RANT

i was just curious. i have never taken a vehicle to any dealer. i am my own warranty station. just like the ckp sensor i had to install today. my truck went out of warranty shortly after i bought it. of course that was before the vp44 went out. just my luck. take it easy.
