Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Notchy shifting

I don't know if Im expecting too much from my NV4500... I did a search and didnt seem to find anyone with similar issues. Anyway, the truck seems to shift notchy into 3rd gear. If I shift slowly it isnt bad, but if Im trying to shift quick it just seems like forever. I dont know if Im expecting too much from a big old truck trans - what do you guys think? I havent checked the fluid yet, maybe I'll just change it. Anything prooven to shift smooth?
