Dyno Day Nov 8

Fastest Cummins/DuraMax/Powerstroke in one place!

Richard Madsen's 95 Ford crew cab with a transplanted 1996 Cummins B 12 valve (from a Dodge) was the star of the drag strip. He ran 11. 42 @ 118. 1 and 11. 49 sec @ 118. 0 mph. After beating an AC Cobra that ran 13. 3, the other Cobras and the Vipers wouldn't line up with him. The crowd went berserk with the full track smoke trail and the mid 11s out of a lifted crew cab.

At the dyno day, we experienced rather cool temperatures inside the shop with the swamp coolers running, and this may have hurt hp numbers a bit. Richard put down 672 hp, and Nathan Wright laid down 639 with his '02 Ram. Both trucks had twin turbos and ran on diesel fuel only. A number of trucks were dyno'ed for test-n-tune purposes, trying different combinations. For the most part, these trucks rans in the 300s and 400s. Several third generation trucks ran, with 333 to 453 hp range. If anyone else wants to post his numbers, add them in a response.

Sickly has not been a good truck to his owner. He refused to give a good hp number and he has been put in the penalty box for modif . . errrr. . . enhanc. . . err. . . maintenance. :D His two latest dyno sheets from a week ago were posted: 799. 8 hp and 799. 9 hp. Who wouldn't be upset at this blatant failure to cooperate and generate 800 hp? :(

We had a great time and enjoyed the mild temperatures. It was also entertaining to see all the ricers and watch Maddog play pac-man with them.

Oo.

That must have been fun to see, sports car drivers afraid of a diesel pickup:D

Joe,

Sorry to hear about your trouble with the headgasket, and congrats on the numbers in testing.

But let me get this stright, the standings went like this:

#1 = twin turbo, p-pump cummins = 672hp

#2 = twin turbo, pdr cam, cummins = 639hp

#3 = single trubo, no drug, TOW-TRUCK Ford = 475hp

Is that right? A tow-truck Ford from Texas snuck up to Veges and got 3rd at the dyno day? ;)

Seems as though both the other trucks were at least 100hp shy on the dyno. Could that be the case for number 3 also? :D

The pecking order was 12 valve, 24 valve, Powerstroke :D

I guess I should have brought Sickly since you are forgetting that DD has the same model Dynojet and was the official MM02 dyno. I just didn't want to deal with bringing two trucks.

Richard ran 686 at MM03 on Arnett's Dynojet; I figure he got a bit of help [more load] from the tire/gear combo he is now running, and lost some from the DV's. I have tried 191 DVs 3 times now and cut DVs once. Richard gets more boost on the track than on the dyno, but you gotta realize that anyone with a large turbo setup has the same situation. Sickly has only one turbo, so we would expect that turbo to be even more affected by the difference between truck weight and simulated weight on the inertia dyno.

It probably does take 800+ FLYWHEEL hp to get the track times he does. The twins should help his engine too, compared to my single Pius turbo, but who knows how much. I have heard as much as 130 hp for a good set but there is a very limited data set on what gains you can expect going from a good single to good twins. I don't feel that anyone lost anything like 100 hp at this event from temperatures, etc. compared to what he could get on the Dynojet under ideal conditions. Also remember that Richard's 806 hp was with about 16% correction factor, and much of that does not really apply to twin turbo'ed engines. So, your comment about being 100 low at this meet does not mean the 100 higher number was the "correct" one.

Joe,

I wasn't trying to imply that. However Richard has made 750+ on several dynos, and then drops to 6xx. Can he be the ONLY one this happens to?

He makes more boost on the street then the dyno eh? I think EVERYBODY that runs the dyno down here says that. That IS the number one commit from people at our dyno days. At it was no different from the Texas Ford at your event.

Anyways, the point of the original post was to show that at a West Coast dyno day a PSD got third. The biggest thrill about that is seeing you type the word "Ford PowerStroke". ;)

Ok...

Now how can this be??????... ... Andy

Jim. .

Weather info for that day does not indicate a reason for low numbers. Humidity was not much of a factor, barometer was good, dew point was low, outside air temp was never above 70. While this certainly was not a "mineshaft" air day it was conducive to HP numbers and not hurting them, which is the reason for my question. One thing that everyone knows is the cooler the air the more HP you will make and I don't by the comment above. Could it have been owner error and they did not properly warm up the trucks when they dynoed??. Just curious... ... ... . Andy

P. S. -BTW Jim,Because its me asking ,I'd bet money on no replies to my questions, as it seems after a recent conversation with a group of our easterners who just returned from out west, someone here has a major problem with us out there. Frosts my rear as to why it had to be brought up behind my back and not to me directly as that person has a way to contact me.

Hum... sounds like the weather was good there, on my dyno runs a few days ago they were 709 and 708 but the air temp at the hat was hotter than normal, I think my pump for the water injection is getting bad... guess I'm going to have to use one of those snow performance ones.
