Easter Jeep safari

Took my Husqvarna saw in to be checked out Monday and come to find out today the piston is pitted on top, and the jug wall is scored. The saw is a 257 and isn't but 5 years old. The machanic that worked on it asked who I had do the last service and I told her and she started to laugh:( Said that place has been known for it's $hitty work. :{ She seems to think that the other shop dropped something down the hole when they were changing the sparkplug and didn't bother retreiving it. So know I'm stuck with a saw that cost more to fix than I paid for it new, a total with labor would be almost $400 :{ The place I used to take the saw lost it's Husky dealership last year and this year they clsoed the doors. (no freekin wounder)

Learned a good leson today: From now on, no mater how bussy I am I will do my own damn maintenance on my equipment. :( I think it's pretty bad when you can't trust some ******* to work on something as simple as a chain saw.

Husqvarna no longer makes a 257 so do you guys know what saw is close to or a little bigger that I should start to look at. My 257 was 55cc or bigger, with a 20" bar.

Sorry had to vent a little, so much for a good weekend:{

Hmmm, cut wood with a working chainsaw, OR not cut wood because the chainsaw is broke.

Where does the bad weekend come into the picture. ??;)

Can't help ya much with any chainsaw ideas, Heck, I've only used one about 4 times. Seemed too much like work to me. :)

Sorry about the troubles.

I've had problems with other types of shops. 4 out of 5 lugnuts loose on my wife's car still boils my blood.

The clutch went on my Stihl Farm Boss. No time to work on so I drop it off. When the call comes to pick up I inquire about the bill. $225:mad: Turns out the oil pump and some other parts were wiped. Mind you, this saw was bought maybe three years ago for $299 and used only mildly. By the way, starting this one has always meant a lot of pulls. I also had dropped off my FS200 trimmer and to backtrack, neither one would idle once warmed up. Anyway, being out away from the house and my tools, I just worked through the idle problem. On my second tank of gas, I realize the saw has quit pumping oil on the bar. Both of them are back at the dealer so I am waiting the outcome.

Darryl i have a husky 61 with a 20 inch bar i bought new in 92. i have used it to cut all my wood. with no maintance beside air filter clean plug every season. I heat strickly with wood untill this year i burnt coal and wood. nothing bad to say about my husky.

although as i reach my middle 40s the saw is not as light as it use to be. but still rocks

A lot of Husky dealers in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire. The 257 is an excellent saw. If you can find a new jug and piston, it is very easy to change out. I used to work in a lawnmower repair shop(family owned). Went to quite a few Briggs, Sthil, and Husky classes.

A good rule of thumb when adjusting the carb...

High Mix - Turn all the way in (just till ya feel it stop, don't force it) and then back it out 1-1/4 turns.

Low Mix - Same as above

When the saw starts run it at full speed and turn the high mix screw in till it sounds like the saw is taking off, then back the screw out till it sounds like it's bogged down. You want the mix screw to be in between those two sounds.

On idle turn the low mix screw in till the chain starts to turn, then back the screw out slowly just till the chain stops.

MAKE SURE YA DO THIS WITH THE BAR AND CHAIN ON!!!

AND ALWAYS MAKE SURE THE CHAIN BRAKE WORKS!!!

When mixing oil and gas, most saws run on 32:1. Some are 50:1

It dosen't hurt to add an ounce or two more oil to the gas.

Also, inside the muffler is a small screen, this needs to come out every so often and get cleaned. It builds up with carbon and causes the saw to run poorly.

Sorry to hear about your problem. I have the exact same saw. I lost count a long time ago how many ricks it has cut. The 257 is the best saw i have ever owned. I have a dealer in the next town but he is closed on saterday, but i am going over they next week for a belt and idler pulley. I will ask him and see what jim thinks maybe he will have parts you need. He is great small engine man and has been a husky dealer for quite a many years. In the fall he used to have cutting contest. The quicks saw won, had to make two full down and back cuts. It was a lot of fun. The guys were hopping saws up just to win a free bar and chain and free sharping for the winter. :D

Three to choose from

I've narrowed it down to 3 saws that I want to look at.

357XP, 20" bar, 57cc = $489. 00

362XP,20" bar, 62cc = $545. 00

365 , 20" bar, 65cc = $490. 00

I got all this info from these two sites

www.alamia.com www.southwestfastner.com

I'm going to a saw shop tomorrow to see what they can do, but just talking over the phone they want $559. 00 for the 357XP. That is a huge differance form what the website advertise and I don't think the saw shop can touch it but I'm going to try anyways. Both of the websites ar offering free shipping right now too. :)

Thanks for your help guys and hopefuly this winter I might try to rebuild the 257 (I really liked that saw:{ ) But right now I can't justify spending almost $300 in parts when it's 5 years old when I can buy a new saw for a couple more hundred dollars.

Thanks again, hope to be cutting soon.

Torque this is right on the money, all I will add is to place the bar in a vise so adjustments can be safely and easily made. You do not want it to scream like mad it should run a tad "fat" as the Moto guys say.

Speaking of Huskies ..... A wee bit off ... ... . There's a Plumbing supply store arround here called One Stop plumbing. On the counter There's a 36 inch ... ... 240 Volt electric saw (Husqvarna believe it or not) and the weight alone for this bad boy HAD TO BE a good 40 pounds. The guy Took it in on trade for some old discontinued supplies and now it adorns the parts counter as a conversation piece.

Mad no more

Got a new saw today, got the 365 with a 20" bar for $449. 00 :D That's a great price for a new saw around here and I even got on TV at the saw shops open house. Can't wait to fire this bad boy up and chew threw some whit oak.
