found www.tirechain.com earlier today. .

Planning to go to Oklahoma this April. We usually go south to Kingman,AZ, and then simply go east on I-40... no problemo!

this time, however, we're thinking about going by way of Southern Utah, Colorado (Denver) and then diagonal across Kansas... Should I get some chains for that loop, or is ice/snow likely to be an issue?
"Tiny" is a 4x4, but she's wearing UPS truck tires (Goodyear Unisteel 159's 245/70R19. 5's)
so she might need a bit more gription if the road surface gets too far past "suboptimal". .
What ch'all mountain people think??-rm

tirechain.com was (just since this a. m. ) sold out of the ones to fit my tires. . these other guys are less expensive, and may be easier to handle, besides (cable/spring) design http://www.vulcantire.com/

might shoot them an order, instead. . (can do both ends of truck (with shipping) for $171

Get 2 sets of chains. having traction on the rears will not give you any steering control on the front. I have run a 2wd service truck in CO. , NM. , and UT for many years and always chained both axels on snow, ice and mud. Never got stuck and was always able to steer, not like the vehicles that would slide into guard rails or other obsticals because they could not control the front end.

Rich M - I actually live in Colorado... . so maybe I can be of help. As far as chains here, I have never used them. Only on RARE occasions have I even used my 4 wheel drive, and everytime was cause I was at a stop light with a little bit of ice on the ground. As long as you take it slow you will be fine. Unless you are going to be travelling hwy 70 through the mountains you probably won't need chains. Also, I can that from Denver north to Wyoming you will not need chains (I actually just traveled this up hwy 25 from denver through Wyoming and it was very clear).

Hope this helps

Kev

rich,I traveled the route between St George UT and Grand Junction CO,I-70 one way then the scenic route back though Zion,Bryce Cyn and Capitol Reef National Parks(don't miss that road, outstanding). Did this in the days after a big snow storm hit, same one that rained on LV a couple of weeks ago,no problems at all. Come April it may even be hot in that part of the country.

Lived in Utah all my life.

Never owned a set of chains. The hyways will be fine. If you are going off road then we can discuss that further.

Enjoy Utah, I know I do!

Planning to spend some of the trip on I-70, so that nails it, gotta get'em... If they stay "cherry" that's cool with me, bec. eventually (2-3 more years) I'm puttin' this desolate desert in the rear-view anyway, and heading back to Oklahoma. . winters get REAL icy in my native homeland, and chains or studded tires are a must, even (especially!) w/ 4wd...

Check out AW Direct. I'm pretty sure the address is www.awdirect.com
I just bought a set of dually chains there for $149. 00. Single wheel chains are $79. 00 I think. Very heavy duty reinforced truck chains. I plow snow for a living here in Pa. and my truck thinks it's a bulldozer with these chains on! I can only imagine what it would do if I put a set on the front too!
------------------

almost makes me wish the tires were "stock"
---almost---

the ones I would need from them (big tires) would run 149 for each end... I think the cables from Vulcan will do, so long as I take them off as soon as the pavement allows

Les Shaub here in WA has a deal where if you buy chains from them and don't use them you can take them back for a refund in the spring. I've never checked to see if they do this with truck chains, but a gal I know used to go for this deal every year until she forgot till it was too late and they wouldn't take them back. I think they probably bank on the fact that most people will forget.

Bill,

At least in the past this only applied to passenger car chains. I tried to take them back when I had a set for my 68 1/2 ton Dodge pickup. No deal.

ordered them today ---should be here "between 20-28Feb" according to the on-line order confirmer. . these don't need tensioners, too, so that scores some "simplicity points" with me:

If I wind up using them, I'll give a "product review"... rm

they're here, and in the box... one pair in each box, and got 2 boxes, after only 6 days via UPS (big "Made in Oregon" sticker on box)

they look good. since they've got 1/4" or 3/16" wire rope circumference runners, they kind of roll up like a sleeping bag, rather than tangle up, like a set of chains. . will be making myself some "portable pavement" from 1x2 channel iron and 3/8 re-bar tomorrow... . that might be a marketable invention, BTW... I'll post pix when fabbed up.
