Now that CI-4 oil is gone, what are you all using?

the death of the diesel pickup

Ford 6.0 guys wanting a Cummins in their

Guy I know is an engine rebuilder. His shop normally recommended running diesel oil. Now that diesel oil has gone to CJ 4, they now require the customer to buy an additive bottle. Otherwise no warranty. I'm curious if the additive bottle can be used to make CJ 4 similar to CI 4/+4.

I think he mentioned the zinc in CI 4 was needed for proper break in.

I didn't say that, did I?

I am having bad UOA with Amsoil at 8,000 miles.

I need to change more often there for I need a cheaper oil. I like Delo but have not heard anything good and some bad about the new CJ delo.

The way your posts reads to me, amsoils isn't making CI-4 :)

how many changes of amsoil have you done? cuz it's kinda mixed with what ever you had before untill you swap it out again.

I don't buy this... I could understand this in a gasser oil since there is a limit on zinc, but diesel oil is still quite good on its own...

Just my thoughts, whether correct or not.

Bingo! Rotella has some new packaging for their 5W/40 but it's still CI-4.

Mike

According to Shell, Synthetic 5w40 Rotella CI-4 was scheduled to be replaced with a CJ-4 version starting in September 07. That was stated on their site... I've seen a bunch of NOS stuff that was CI-4, but I really don't scope out oil I don't run...

I think this is the 2nd or 3rd batch of Amsoil in the truck with about 10K on each change and a filter at 5K.

I just think that with the extra fuel from the Smarty and the short trips I do running an extended drain just doesn't work out well. If I drove a stock truck I bet I would have better results.

if he's building flat tappet engines, then a modern/conventional oil isn't going to cut it... now, if they're roller cam engines, it's just a rain dance IMO

Modern/conventional gasser oil or diesel oil?

A CJ-4 diesel oil is still better than any conventional API-SM gasser oil, as far as wear additives...

Ohhh my truck couldn't go past 5000 miles with any fueling box. I've tried once and the the report at 10K was REALLY bad. at 5K it was ok. so maybe 7500 was my max. My truck gets warmed up just about every run it takes and 20 miles one way typically (except at lunch).

Now I got the by-pass and at 5000miles my reports are 50% better (or so, I have yet to do the math) then with out the bypass. so at 10K we'll see what happens with just a bypass and oil filter change.

The first run of the by-pass, I installed the filter (and full flow filter) at 2500 miles into the oil change. at 5000 miles into the oil change I changed hte full flow, added a quart and got a test done. So it's a little "odd ball" but shouldn't matter.

Walmart is still selling CI4 synthetic 5-40 in the Shell Rotella. I had used Amsoil for more than 30 years, but the last price increase and the TDR oil articles made me change.

I am sure running a bypass helps and I am sure your longer commutes help, but like you say with any fueling box there is going to be more crap in the oil.

With my short trips I am just going to stick with shorter OCI.

I was just hoping to stick with the CI-4 oils. I dumped in my last 3 gallons of delo CI-4 today.

Why woud you stop using an oil that you have used for 30 years? The articles in the TDR were ONLY looking at oil ADDITIVES! Oils are much more than just the additives used in them. One must also look at the formulations of the entire product then work it to get a better prospective of how an oil is going to work for you. Apparently, the amsoil worked good for you for 30 years, why would it have changed?

I'm using whatever the dealer is using under the free oil changed for 7 years at two changes per year program when I bought the truck.

OK guys... ... I thought I had this CI/CJ stuff all figured out, but now I am more confused than ever.

We are full-timers. The truck pulls a 17K fiver all over western USA. Everything from ocean to desert, summer or winter. Since I buy fuel all over and never get used to one station, pull heavy, etc... . I change oil every 3K miles. I know this is overkill according to some, but I am hoping this is the last truck I buy, and want it to last another 20 years if possible.

If I change at 3K intervals, does it really matter if I use CI or CJ? I have been using Rotella (non-syn), but last time, it really started smelling. Thinking of changing to the Premium Blue next time.

Since we travel all the time, I have no place to store 5 gal. pails like some of you are using.

Thanks... ... Steve

Im running Delo and have been considering switching over to RP. I am currently changing the oil every 6k and would like to extend it out to maybe 18 or 24k.
