just installed the fuel lines. i started priming the filter with the pump, after about 30 pumps fuel started leaking out fast, but only after each pump. is the pump bad or is it something else. if it is the pump can i still prime the system with starter and keep driving.

hellllllp

tried cranking 3 or four times for 20 seconds still nothing, and still no fuel underneath. is it a problem with air in the system and if it is how do i get it out.

i didnt touch the over flow valve. just replaced the two rubber lines that are above the starter. the leak didnt show up until about 30 pumps then went away. started pumping again and eventually the leak started to show up again.

Joe G's fuel system writeup - Dodge Cummins Diesel Forum

Go down in the write up until you get to the part titled lift pump. Goes into great depth on the o-rings in the lift pump, and how to fix. Or spend the green and buy new. Last time I checked cummin's was selling them at $110. 00.

Covers the rubber washer/o-ring that is on the line up to the fuel filter. Cummin's wants to sell the complete steel line now. If it is that I would just flip it over, IF it aint disintegrated.

Side note, that if you did delete the heater, the sealing ring could be pinched and letting fuel squirt over to the lift pump.

i have had suspisions of the lift pump being bad. the truck always feels like it has more power with a full tank. is that a symptom. ill get back under tomorrow and pump again, this time with an extra set of eyes on top to track down the leak. ill probably replace the transfer pump too, the rubber button is cracked up bad and probably an indication that the inside isnt doing great. so after a new lift and tranfer pump how would i bleed the lines without useing a ton of starter.

ahh the joys of owning a 16 year old truck at 185k. headaches.

I changed out my lift pump at 300k miles as preventative maintenance. It was still okay, so it went into my toolbox as a spare. My injection pump is the original at 313k miles.

As far as priming after fuel line replacement, I cracked one of my fuel lines and turned the engine over until it wanted to start (10 or 15 seconds). Then tightened the fuel line and it started right up. It did spray some diesel on the engine though.

Loosen bleeder screw on top of fuel filter housing, pump primer until clear fuel (no bubbles) leaks out with each pump. Close bleeder.

Pump primer until relief valve on injection pump "squeaks" (could take 50-100-200 pumps).

Start truck, give it extra pedal, will probably cough/sputter at first.

i remembered that i pulled a stupid and primed the filter while it was screwed on tight. regardeless ill probably end up replacing the lift and transfer pumps anyway whether it runs or not. the transfer pump button is dried out and cracked the truck is originally from texas and then moved to new mexico for most of its life so the rubber is dried out. its only about 210 for both. at least i got rid of the leaking fuel lines. the culprit was clear, it had cracks up and down that were working together toweep out fuel, and the other one looked worse, but wasnt leaking yet.

a little tip for anyone who hasnt replaced the lines yet. install the longer line behind the dip stick tube so you dont have to go back and move it when it gets in the way of the fuel filter. :rolleyes:

I don't understand your reference to a "lift pump" AND a "transfer pump". Are you saying you have both? What year is your truck? You said it was 16 years old which would make it a '95. Unless you have an auxiliary fuel tank you shouldn't have two fuel pumps.

found it

well i checked it this morning. primed again with filter loose this time and fuel dripped out of the button on the tranfer pump. bad diaphram i guess so i ordered a new one from genos. 100 bucks, not a big deal, but i have to drive the yukon for a few days until the part gets here. it has no torque. :{:mad::{
