Teenage Boys are gone and I think it is time for the TST Power Kit.

1995 2500 4WD SLT Automatic with HD Converter. Everything else is Stock except the Cataletic converter was removed buy previous owner with a straight exhaust pipe. 4" i think.

I have EGT Gauge, Boost Gauge,Trans Temp Gauge and K&N Air Filter.

I think I would like pulling my 8,000LB Travel Trailer with a #6 plate.

My worry is I have 250000 miles on this thing. It is an everyday driver.

I'm 53 Years old and plan on keeping this truck a long time.

Will a Power Kit #6 plate kill my truck?

The thing to understand about a plate it that is ONLY in play at WOT or close to it. Any less throttle is the same as stock. The plate is the full load throttle stop.

I put a #6 in my 95 4spd. Result:

1. Too much smoke

2. Makes clutch slip

3. Less fuel economy.

4. High EGT on long grades.

5. All of this is probably what you want if you are looking for power, but I wish I had bought a #10. It would probably still be installed in my engine.

I love my #8 plate. It makes enough heat on long grades that you better be watching the pyrometer, fuel economy is great, power is plenty for me.

I put a #5 in my 96 which caused the "heavy duty" TC to slip. Now I have a #8 and it smokes excessively upon takeoff. Mabey something else is wrong. I can't find a boost leak and have adjusted the afc star wheel many times. Anyway, be prepared for a $1300 converter and possibly a trans rebuild which is what happened to me. The whole incident damn near made me sell the thing and buy a gas pickup.

Good insight so far..... question for anybody with an after market plate: I am considering a #6 or #8, going to go in next week. Are you happy with yours? and Any opinions on which one? (looking to eventually achieve 300+ HP)

I haven't tried a 6 or 8, but I run a #10 and love it.

I know it's not what you asked, but I'd very highly recommend a #10 and a 3k GSK. Do both at the same time and you'll think you're driving a completely different truck. BTW, I also drive a 95 Auto and Tow a 10k 5th wheel.

#5

I am running a #5 in stock position in my 95. It runs right on the edge, EGTs are good, stock clutch is still holding (although a worry), mileage is good, as good or better than stock, and smoke is not bad (unless at 10,000 feet and get heavy foot between gears). I have modified the intake because there was too much restriction on stock filter, it would peg minder. Went with AFE filter and my own custom setup, have welder and PVC, will travel...

I would suggest hooking up with some one in your area who knows what he is doing,He will be able to customize your power for what you want to accomplish.

When I mod a truck I try to find out the owners goals also keeping in mind what he may want to grow into in the future. It's all about the package... ... not just one part.

Balance

Bob is right, it is all about balance, change one thing, you change another, until you have the proper balance of fuel, air, exhaust, and drivetrain to cover your added power. Mileage is no issue with a Cummins, I have seen trucks with over threehundred thousand get beefed then run another three...

Rottenron,

I have the # 10 plate so what is 3k GSK.

RMcKinney 1995 2500 Stock for now with Boost, EGT and Trans Temp Gauges on Drivers post

How do you like the #10 plate? A 3k GSK is a 3000 rpm governor spring kit. On a 95 truck your stock fuel pump governor springs are starting to force a defueling as early as 2100 rpm. The 3k GSK will allow it to go to 3000 rpm before defueling. Makes a huge difference in driveability in my experience. The kit is available from pretty much every vendor. It's fairly easy to install. I went in through the side of the fuel injection pump following the directions on the PDR site ( which hopefully are still there)
