Numerically highest gear for rear end?

Whats the numerically highest gear you can put in a 1st gen? This would also be the lowest gear ratio possible. 4. 10:1 or 5 something?



Was filling up the other day and some guy pulls in next to me with a 93. He starts talking to me and says the truck was purchased new and was actually a test vehicle for Chrysler. In fact... "they called him after he bought it and wanted it back for a couple days to remove some secret test parts". He told me he refused even though they were to pay him for time and travel. I just thought whatever.



Anyhow he said it had like 7. 13:1 or some high gear. Maybe higher. I can't remember. It did sound unreal to me however.



Then he started talking about his mileage with his "computer chip" etc. On a 1st gen I thought??? Thats when I quit listening.

I don't know about highest but my 89' 3 speed automatic had either a 3. 03 or 3. 11, still wouldn't run 80 mph with the governor

The 3. 08 was the highest gear they put in the gen1 trucks. The lowest was 4. 11's.



I want to say the lowest ratio is something like a 5. 13 for dana 60\70 but not sure. Never offered as an option in the light duty trucks.



Talking to people at fuel stations is an enlightening experience. You just never know the wonderous things that can be learned until you do it. :-laf

3. 08 it was, 3/4 ton 4X4, roughest truck I ever owned without a trailer or load on it, no cruise control, bought a truckers cruise (put it on the pedal and jammed it under the dash) that I'd kick out of the way if I had to stop fast, those were the days! seems like high rpm was around 1,800, this whole conversation brought back memories, have a great evening

the air force toter trucks built from 1st gens had like a 7. 17 gear. top speed with a 727 was in the 30ish mph range. this guy sounds like an idiot.

Did you ask him for some of whatever he was smoking, because I'm sure it's worth a bit if you travel to the right part of town.



Either that or those secret parts, I'll bet they're worth a fortune. Right from the snake oil in the sump up to the krypton cylinder heads.



Also the computer chip that picks up a screw driver and allen wrench and adjusts your fuel pump for you... . NASA might want to know about that.



Was he able to explain any of these "secret test parts"? Really, if you bump into him again, I'm sure we could all use the entertainment of a good story teller. Ask him if it has special spark plugs... thatd be a good story, I'm sure.

X2 those 1st gen tugs had the numerically highest (lowest) ratio. I've seen them for sale on ebay, and other gov't surplus sites.

He probably got one with a FFRV. They can go 150 Mph in 1st gear.

FFRV = Foo Foo Restriculator Valve.
