I lost 5th gear in my NV4500 about 3 weeks ago... . and I kept driving the truck. On Saturday, I lost 3rd and 4th also so now I need to rebuild or replace. My question is, are the 2wd and 4wd tranies the same in the rear output shaft? I found a very reaonable 2wd trans, but just don't know what all would need to be changed over to make it fit my 4x4. Thanks, CHAD

They are different, the 4x2 has an extension housing, but maybe you can just switch them between trannies. Or you might just spend the bucks and get your transmission built right and upgrade the mainshaft and 5th gear so it won't happen again. You could buy the 4x2 transmission for spare parts to use in rebuilding yours since internally they should be the same (provided it's from a '97 or older).

I thought just the tailshaft was different... but I could be wring maybe someone can verify that for sure.

The extension housings are different and the main shaft is also not the same. I have converted a 2 wheel drive to a 4 wheel drive for my conversion.
