MoPaR recommends API GL-4 gear lube 75-90. I was sold SynPower 75-90 gear oil with API GL-5 from valoline. I was told it was better then GL-4. when i bought the 97 3500 it had 57000 miles on it. the dealer said he change all the lubricants. i tow 36 foot hallmark goose neck car trailer to the drags. was going down inerstate 70 this cheby tought he was going to pass me i gave him a run for awile. anyway when i got to the drags i seen oil comming out of the bottom of bellhousing. on the way home clutch started slipping took to local dodge stealer they replaced trans & clutch under warranty. they said transmission had wrong oil in it. SO you see why i'm asking this question about GL-4 .

transmission oil

Yes the 4500HD is supposed to use the GL 4 synthetic oil exclusively. Some internal parts are not designed for the additive package that is used in the GL-5 formulation. Castrol Syntorque is the only oil that Dodge and New Venture Gear says to use. The Dodge part # is 48774459. Some others have tried other synthetic lubes with some success. There is an article on it in the TDR a while back, check you indexes. On the web do a search as this topic has been addressed several times.
