Well I have nearly 300 miles on it now. The trick to find reverse is to not allow the transmission to stop. Either by getting into reverse while the truck is still moving or if I have stopped and it won't go in, release the shift lever, let the clutch out to spin the transmission, and then try again. The transmission is still quite stiff but it is getting better. You definitely can't speed shift through 3rd and 4th. The synchronizers are very stiff and will frequently not allow the gears to align and drop in. Especially cold. This can be embarrassing as everyone else is accelerating from the red light and I moving after starting out in second, but can't get it into 3rd! Sometimes the same thing happens in 4th. 5th and 6th are easy though. They seem to always drop right in. I'll keep you posted. Ken Irwin

Would you do it again?

Whenever I done my 6 speed conversion in my 97 I done away with the factory 4x4 shifter and boots and used the 98 up 4x4 shifter that bolts to the floor pan and the large plastic console with the cup holders. It required some modifications to the floor pan but when I was done it looked like the truck was made that way. I have another 97 that the 5 speed broke this weekend. I'm going to do the same conversion. It's been 3 years since I done the last one and the place where I got the transmission last time are all out. Where's the best place to get one without it costing a mint. I did not know you could order them from your dealer. How much are they?
