Im getting ready to take a trip from South FL. to Nasheville then to Oklahoma City and back to FL. Im planing on towing around 8,000 pounds up and 3,800 back. I really do not want to have any problems Ive noticed a loud ginding noise in the drive train when coasting. Its only happend three times of wich today it happend twice the gear selector was in neutral position. ANY ADVISE The oil in the trans is not even a year old and it is still full same with the transfercase.

The Engine is at idle and the transmission is in neutral and you are going down the road and the noise is still there. In light of that I'd say that the noise is some where in the drive train aft of the clutch. The wheel bearings, the differential, the universal joints, carrier bearing (this I suspect) and fifth gear in the transmission. Start with the simple things. U joints and carrier bearing.

Good luck.

Jim

Jim its in the trans. It almost sounds as if I were trying to put it in gear with out using the clutch and grinding the gears. ANY HELP!

Yes I still have 5th gear fixed that last year new nut and gear assy. Did the noise agin today. Only makes noise when it out of gear coasting ive even moved the shifter around no change in the noise. Im kinda wishing what ever it is it would just break so I can fix it. Then I could feel confident driving the truck again.
