Differential Problems - What to look for?

BUY IT!! It works on gravity flow. Oil splash is caught on a sloping lip and collects around the filter element (replaceable). After draining through the element the oil is returned to the sump. I'm glad I didnt wait. :) $29 from Geno

Well if you like metal grindings floating in YOUR oil you then you dont want this filter then. You're right I guess, who wants clean oil anyway? This sure beats the "metal flake lube" that came out of mine at the first change. GRIND ON!

TD,

Sounds like you might have bigger problems with the transmission.....

If 'metal flakes' in a manual transmission are such a problem why is it that no transmission that I know of comes with a filter? I don't know if big rig trans come with a filter - haven't ever looked.

I just don't see the purpose of a gravity feed/splash filter on a manual transmission. Now if you were to add a pump/filter/heat exchanger it might be a different story.

Every manual transmission I have ever changed the oil in always had suspended metal shavings in the oil. My NV-3500 in my 95 Dakota has a magnetic drain plug AND a magnetic fill plug (from the factory)and they always have metal junk stuck on the magnets. I was really surprised to hear learn that the 5600 was not equipped with them from the factory. The NV-3500 oil has been changed annually since new and has 160,000 on it. I think this $29 kit is a nice way to get some sort of filtering for the 4500/5600 gear boxes. It operates on the splash from the PTO gear. The logic of "if they needed it, it would be on there from the factory" is sorta lame nowdays. The OEM suppliers are more worried about profit than longevity IMHO. I always put magnetic drain plugs on everything I own, perhaps that is one reason my engines last so long. I sure like the "SuperPlug" on my ISB.

TD, I have to agree with you on the filter setup. It is manufacturered by Eaton-Fuller, the world leader of industrial and commercial transmissions and drive systems.

Magnetic drain plug - yes. The splash filter - I'll save my $29 and put it towards an oil change. So you have both a mag drain plug & the filter? Which one works & which one doesn't? I'd be willing to be the mag drain plug collects any ferrous mat'l before it would ever have a chance to get splashed into the filter. I could be wrong - it's happened before. My wife told me so.

My comment about the factory not installing a filter - not installing a filter really is a cost issue. If transmission failures are/were causing warranty expenses could be prevented by a simple $29 (factory cost is probably $2. 90) filter then the factory would be installing them.

DC is worried about profits over everything

I just installed one of those filters for my NV5600. I won't know how well it works until I get a chance replace the gear oil and inspect the filter. I did notice some gear oil leaking. Did you put any silicone when you installed this thing?

I wish New Venture would have put a drain plug on the bottom on the transmission. I did not get a complete drain when I removed the PTO cover.

Finally, I believe the main motivation for car manufacture is

pure profit over everything else.

My 2 pesos. .

Charles,

I didn't use the supplied gaskets, they have a tendency to crush if over tightened and leak. I just made sure all the suffaces were clean and dry , then used a thin film of RTV on both the cover and splash plate.

WeirCummin,

Thanks for the info. I guess next time I pull the filter off, I'll use

some silicone. The cork gasket started to flatten out and I couldn't tighten down the cover much.

NV4500 Magnet

Don't forget about the wafer shaped magnet bonded to the PTO cover on the driver's side.

I had the usual film/sludge on mine when I changed the fluid at about 52k miles.

B9Mile,

I was not aware of the wafer shaped magnet on the driver's side PTO cover. Thanks for the info. Next time I drain my gear oil,

I'll be sure to inspect it for any metal particles.

Wafer Shaped Magnet

I wasn't aware there was one either until J. Donnelly posted info about this sometime last year. I think the instructions that Geno's Garage provides with the filter kit say to install the filter in place of the passenger's side PTO cover. The magnet on the other cover is probably the reason for this.

THANKS for the heads-up on this magnet Joe!
