A while back in the TDR there was an article on the oils used in the NV 4500 5-speed transmissions. The article included some testing data on different oils and different costs of the Castrol Syntec. I have searched and searched my back issues but I can not find this article. Any body know what issue it was in?

I can't help on locating the past post but I can tell you that the Red-Line "MT-90" is an extremely high grade 100% Synthetic that meets ALL of the specific requirements called for in the oil spec for the NV-4500. I have been towing a 6000+ lb. boat at 70 miles / hr. in the Florida summer heat for two years now and this MT-90 still looks and smells like it came out of the bottle. I am very happy and I did not have to submit to being "violated" by my Dodge parts counter for a Gallon of the Castrol "Syntorque" (Not even a true synthetic, it just "behaves" like one).

Hey Sled Puller

I went back and read the thread that you referenced. It is interesting to me that it seems to be generally accepted among the members that the NV4500 is probably at the upper limit of its design. Several of the responses mention the heat buildup and oil breakdown between the gear teeth at the higher temps encountered during the warmer months. Then we read the BIG press release and the DC/NV boys are "YeHaw" gonna bump up the power on these babies and use the same gearboxes! How they gonna handle the extra heat and pressure now? Wonder if they are gonna come up with a new lube that we have to go back to the dealer to get! OR an additive! Boy are we gonna get hosed!

The NV4500 seems to do real well, especially with the Std. Trans. mainshaft. Old-time TDR members remember the Cummins Recon Land Speed Record truck, estimated to put out 450 hp and 890 ft lb. Even my poor old sickly Ram puts about 600 hp and 1400 ft lb. through the 4500. Normal usage and trailer towing have gone fine with my NV4500. There are some, however, who like to drag around 42,000 pound sleds and that can, and does, break most anything. Whaddaya expect

lube/real life testing/use

Not having used the recommanded lube for min of 745k of veh life

and not working for d/c-castrol/redline/or any other lub mfg company I can stand any claim to this statement--castrol Syntorq same wt_BUT Gl of (4) rating vs (GL 5) will In MY use/test)/use)protect the bearings and parts of the NV4500. Miles of use not up dated in bio!!

Having used my choice of lube in drive(rear gears) and Eng. Not Castrol !!due to millions of mile use(and eng lube) when this company went to the SAE board to get there rating for there gear lube were not allowed that rateing UNtill they removed the red dye (suppose it was a political SAE board thing) ?? Example 1 grain of salt/silica in 1000 gal will due it. .

When a company has to spend min 25k$ + to get a approved gl rating do we beleve for a moment our now high priced lube tec'ng isnt going to not have a second sibling?? I wounder??
