I have a 2001 3500 4x4 dually with nv 4500 5 speed pulling a 20 foot gooseneck cowtrailer. The edge with attitude setting was on extreme and driver was doing 70 with empty trailer from Corpus Christi to Houston Texas with outside day time temp at 100 degrees. I told the driver to change the setting to tow and slow down to 60 mph and moniter the temp closely on this run from corpus to orlando florida, the temp alarm was going off at 231 for about 15 minutes in downtown stop and go construction traffic in Houston. After the driver called me and slowed down to 65 it stayed at aroud 211 to 229 during the rest of the daylight run at 65 mph. At night the trans temp was around 162 to 175 with the edge on town and running 65 mph. After the truck got to Orlando and was un hooked from the empty 20 foot cow trailer it has been running around 130 degrees at 70 mph. . i changed the nv 4500 oil and overfilled it some with lucas sync. . Do you guys think this transmission is going out or are these reading similar to what your nv 4500 5 speed are showing on your edge with attitude screens?? I am thinking its about to blowup and strand my driver??? I have a week before its do to return on the 24 hour trip with a load of horses, think i need to replace transmission before it trys to come home?? Thanks for all and any coments!!!

What is normal temp for a 5 nv 4500?????

Does anybody on here have a edge with attitude on a 24 valve and New Venture 4500 5 speed transmission???? What does your transmission temp read at its highest temp???? Surely somebody has an idea of what is normal?? Thanks in advance for any replys???

I have a 98 12V 5spd that has 378 RWHP and tow an 8K lb, 30ft travel trailer through the interior of B. C. during the summer often.

I have trans temp and rear diff. temp gauges that will give some some interesting numbers through the Rockies in the hot summer.

During long pulls the trans will see temps as high as 210 - 215 and will run an average of 195 - 200 on the flats (I run Redline synthetic in the trans).

Have been running the last 5 years (125K miles)this way with out issues. I should add that the truck has 3:54 gears, 5" lift and 35" BFG MT's, and trans is original, never rebuilt and has 230K miles total on it.

If your truck has 4:11's it may also contribute to higher temps due to the increase in output shaft RPM.

Most importantly, I think you should have your temperature probe checked for calibration or get an infared heat gun (cheap at most parts outlets) and confirm that the temperatures are true. The truck/trans may not have any issues at all.

Good luck with it,

HP

I've had my NV4500 to 235F before, towing in a headwind on a hot day. It took a long time for the temp to drop, there's a fair amount of mass in that trans and no "cooling system" per se so once it gets heat saturated it takes awhile for the heat to radiate away.

The temps you are quoting sound realistic in the conditions you speak of. That truck would be a good candidate for Fast Coolers which bolt on in place of the PTO cover plates and provides a means of helping cool the trans FAST COOLER KIT - (DODGE 5-SPEED AND 6-SPEED)-Dodge Cummins Diesel Truck Accessories - Geno's Garage

While 235F is getting up there it's not a concern yet as long as you have a good lube. But I wouldn't let it get to 250F, that's getting a little too hot.

Interesting. I have a 1/2 ton chebby with a nv4500 and 4bt. After 2 hr of empty cruising, it read 202*. I have amsoil in the trans. Should I be changing it? I did think of using a pump and cooler to keep it cool. I do tow sometimes and I hate to think how hot it gets. I just put the gauge on so this is a new thing to me.
