NV 4500 rebuild

Can a NV 4500 from a gas truck be rebuilt with new shafts for a diesel trans and hold up just as good as one intended for diesel?

IIRC, the only difference is the input and output shafts. Some of the output shafts are the same if you ordered the truck with the heavy duty package, Dana 60 front, and 70 rear. I had mine out of the '01 when I had the engine torn apart, and it's all the same internal parts... ...
