Looking for some experienced opinions. I did a 4500 upgrade a while back to my dads 91. 5 after the second getrag failed.

From the begining it has been impossible to shift into reverse unless you go into the upper gears first. I don't think this is normal and it is a pain. Are there any longevity issues.

He has a few long hauls on it already and it hasn't changed. The reason I question it, is he got it from the same place that supplied the getrags with a 12k/1yr warranty. Both went out in under 20k. 8K/14 mo with the second one.

I hate to see him get burned again and would be very happy to hand deliver it to the place of purchase if I had a good reason to pull it before the warranty is up.

hard to find reverse

Mine dont do it ,i just got a sticking brake thats iritateing me after installing new hard ware and shoes :-{}

Do you have GL4 oil in it ???????

I had an 89 W150 that did that on 1st and reverse, but it was and NP435 (granny 4 speed). The problem was the clutch not releasing quite enough. You would have to go into 2nd or 3rd the stop the transmission from spinning, because those gears are syncronized, then go into 1st or reverse. If reverse on a NV4500 isn't syncronized, I would say the clutch isn't releasing all the way.

If you are using the Sachs clutch that came with the truck, the "nose" of the 4500 that the throw out bearing slides on is too long. Either grind the end of the clutch disk hub or the end of the bearing retainer about . 060".

Thanks for the ideas, we put a lukes gold or something like that in it on the first change over. I will check to see if it is still rotating while in neutral clutch in, and go from there.

I was aware of the clearance issue and had the retainer cut prior to the install. But I didn't watch over the machining so no guarantees.

Again thanks.
