Dodge manual gives a part number of 4874464 for the NV 5600. Does any body know just what this is?

Dodge uses Pennzoil Synchromesh available from most parts dealers. I'm running Redline MT right now and happy with it. Search on 5600 fluid, you will get a LOT of suggestions.

NV5600 fluid

I just purchased that very gear oil at my local Dodge dealer for my NV5600 for $16/qt. Not cheap as you need 5 qts. It is synthetic and is the specified product for your transm.
I found the MOPAR ATF-4 for the transfer case at Walmart for $5. 25/qt.
I also bought 7 qts. of GL-5 75W-90 synth. for the frt/rear differential for $21/qt. at a different Dodge dealer. #@$%!
I am sticking with the Dodge specified fluids to preserve my warranty position. A little more $$$ but worth it to me.

Now if I could find the 14 & 17 mm hex to change the fluid life will be good.

Pennzoil Synchromesh is available here at the local Kragen's... about $8/qt. BTW... It's not synthetic, it's dino based with somw special friction modifiers.

It is a "Part number" for the Syncromesh NV-5600 Transmission, which is a

5W-30 oil designed specificly for the NV-5600. It is NOT an Engine oil.

Amsoil makes an oil that meets the Chrysler/GM spec, and shows that part number for as a replacement. It does meet the Chrysler MS-9224 Specs. Retails for $10. 85/Qt.

I am using Amsoil syncromesh, linky... works great.

Yep, Amsoil here also. Works great and improves the shifting a little

After procrastinating for a month, looking for and finding the right tools and running out of time I finally did my gearboxes today. It was 40F, raining and laying in wet gravel. The only positive is that when you spill red ATF on your head it is easy to see.

Actually it was relatively easy. Used the Chrysler specified fluids so I can look

Mr. warranty man in the eye and tell him so if things come apart early.

Both diff's, x-fer case and NV5600 transmission are immersed in clean clear new fluids.

After taking a drive it seems that it is shifting much smoother. Maybe it is all in my head.

Thanks for the advice and suggestions.

Ready for our Wed. departure to Az. for the winter. :)

17mm hex: I bought a metric bolt with a 17mm head and two metric nuts for about a buck. Put the nuts on the bolt (add some locktite if you like), lock the two nuts together as tight as you can, hammer some threads on the bolt if you want/need to, put the bolt head in the fill plug and loosen with a wrench. Use the inner nut for loosen, the outer nut for tighten. Might not be pretty but it works great.

I was under the impression the OE synchromesh fluid was manufactured by Texaco??

If you are worried about warranty, then running the OE fluid is the best bet... if not, there are a lot of options out there.

Aww... the heck with the 17mm... . (which I have but don't use)

Just use the bottom PTO cover bolt to drain and the top PTO cover bolt to fill. Stick the nozzle of the bottle into the hole and fold the bottle in the middle as you squeeze. At some point you can fold the bottle for clearance and squirt almost every drop into the case.
