Wonder if anyone else has had any oil leak problems with their 6-Speed trannies?

It appears I have an input shaft seal failing on my 6-Speed. Looks like transmission fluid coming out from just under the fly wheel. No leaks when truck is just sitting there but' after returning from a drive, the underside of the transmission case is wet with the orange Texaco syncomesh fluid.

Have one of the early 6-Speeds made in Spring of 1999.

Yes I had the same leak on mine, noticed it with only a couple thousand miles on it, took it to dealer at 20000 miles. That has been 40000 miles now with no further problems. That was about the only thing they could find a problem with. Carson Dodge fixed the lift pump my dealer saw no problem with.

Riflesmith is correct, the oil is same color as regular oil, there is some kind of red goop they use between the trans and engine, maybe some kind of anti oxdizer since it alum and iron.

Larry do you know what they did to fix the problem?

Frank, this is probably not your problem but something to check when you pull the transmission. Mine had a leak that was at first thought to be the front seal - that was replaced and still the same problem. The dealer took it apart again and found that the leak was do to a poor seal between the bell housing and the transmission. On the 5600, the bell housing 'is' the front plate of the transmission, unlike most other transmissions. It would be worth while to change the front seal and reseal the transmission to bell housing. Good luck!

I had to have my transmission resealed between the bell housing & transmission. They used some type of special sealant. They said there isn't any gasket between the two. It's been leak free ever since. Jeff

Thanks

Thanks everyone for the replies.

If I get a chance, I'll take it to a place that specialized in manual trannies and have them take a look at it and see what it's going to cost to get the work done. The truck has 63k miles and is well out of warranty.

Frank

Hey Frank, My truck was done under warranty. When I got the paper work back for it it had the cost on it. The cost from the dealer was around $170. Just a ball park figure for you to compare to. Jeff

The good & BAD News

Thanks everyone for the replies.

The good news is there is nothing wrong with the transmission.

The bad news is I have a 2" horizontal crack in the engine block on the RH side, near the back of the block. I found the problem by adding some UV dye to the coolant and then went searching with a Black Light.

The crack appears to seep antifreeze as the block heats and the coolant comes under pressure. It appears the crack is a casting error and has been there, probably since the engine was built. The leak became noticeable about a week ago, when the weather turned cold. After suspecting the fluid to be antifreeze, I noticed the overflow reservoir was empty... . Plenty in engine.

Going to call dealer tomorrow and see what they say. Wish me luck!

Frank, the good part is your covered under the 5 year 100K mile engine warranty. They will put in a new short block. I bet you have a "53" block.

I hope you're right.

Pit Bull,

I hope you are right about them putting in a new short block.

What's the scoop with the "53 block". Can you tell me more?

My truck was built in the Spring of 99.

Thanks,

Frank

Just do a search on "cracked block" to much information for me to put in one post. You will see that others have had their blocks replaced under warranty. Seems to be the ones with a "53" on the block right under the VP44 and just above the oil pan on the drivers side of the truck. Good luck but the dealer I am sure will replace your block.

I just had mine replaced. I thought I had a rear main engine seal leaking, come to find out it was both the rear main and the front transmission seal. It happened with less than 25K miles.

You had your block replaced or seals?

53 Block

Did some checking yesterday and found I have a block casting # of 53.

Called Carson dodge yesterday and made an appointment for next Tuesday. Told them that my truck has a cracked block and leaking antifreeze.

I printed out several threads about the 53 blocks and will take them with me when I go to the Dealer. Hopefully there won't be any hassle.

Thanks to all for the suggestions/help.
