My truck is at the dealer for a vp 44 and lift pump replacement,I told them it was hard to go into 1st and reverse, and that I changed the gear oil two months ago thinking it would shift into gear easier which it did slightly. I got a call from the service manager saying that they have to put new syncro's in the transmission. Does anybody know if that will cure my problem? My truck just turned 42,000. Also what about the in tank lift pump? will this service the vp44 adequately?

That transmission is'nt even broke in yet. :-laf I would tell them to not touch the transmission at all. What kind of fluid did you put in it??

I am not promising that it will work, but I put Redline MTL in my transmission when I first got my truck and it shifts alot nicer than it did before. On that same note, a friend of mine tried it and did'nt like it. Some guys on here like Royal Purple, some like Redline, and others use Amsoil. The Redline happened to work for me. I seriously doubt there is any problems with your transmission. If it is only hard going into 1st or reverse it may be a wore ou pilot bearing, hanging up even when the clutch pedal is depressed.

I was told by the tech that there is a revised syncro and that it would cure the difficult shifting, if it is the pilot bushing the transmission still needs to come out. Believe me I don't want them to take the transmission out,but this tech is surpossed to be the best diesel tech in central Mass, and he drives a 6 speed ram also. I had to wait 2 weeks for him to get back from vacation.

How much are we talking?

IMHO. Stay away from the intank LP. Seems that the pressures are to low for the VP44. There was a thread about the pressure at idle being around 10psi and would drop below 5 or go to 0 at WOT. The general consensus is that you have 13 or so at idle and never get below 5 at WOT. Get a big line kit and a LP relocation kit. Put the LP as close to the tank as you can.

What's the price if you weren't under warranty? I've got a grind going into 5th if I shift too fast (which it didn't used to do). Just haven't been in to have it checked out as I usually just pause a second before hitting fifth and it won't do it.

Just a thought, i had the same problem, pulled the transmittion at 23,000 to take a look myself(i dont trust my dealer here at Corpus Christi)used a bore scope to look at everything, my dad uses his old 02 to hotshot haul with, he gave me the comment of useing some of his 50 weight shell synthetic, works damn good and havent been making metal shavings since :-laf ..... Get the trans done. My '00 6spd shifts like crap and I wish it was still under warranty for the revised syncros. Can you post the syncro and other req'd P/Ns?

pumps are done just picked up my truck tonight, they did not do the transmission yet because they are still waiting for parts, that might not be availible, so I was told by the service writer that they are contacting DC to see if they can put in a new transmission,I will keep you posted NVR.
