About what kinda temps do you guys see with your pyros? I want to paint my case and want to know if I should use special high temp paint. I have some that said not to use on equipment that will climb to 200+ Farenheit.

All right Gary... and anyone else that feels like chiming in... I have seen some pretty good tech topics being discussed. So... chew on this and let me know what you think.

I have been contemplating putting an exterior pump and filtration setup on my NV5600. I have it pretty well figured out. I think. After having to replace a 5600 at 185k I am now thinking more seriously about it. Here it goes.

Tap an appropriate size hole into the custom 1/4" thick FAST Cooler covers for -8 lines. one side is feed the other return. Install a FASS pump system with appropriate micron filters. Install an automatic transmission cooler that utilizes -8 connections. Sounds simple right? Okay...

What about the micron size for the filters?

Is 10 going to be as small as I should go or hit the books at the local NAPA to find a larger micron size.

Also... What about the viscosity of the oil? What would you think it is compared to? I have found Kinematic Viscosity charts online that rate fluids in measurements called CentiStokes, but they do not have synchromesh ratings. It is rather thin compared to other fluids I have seen in a gearbox. Do you think the makers would have data rating their oils viscosity?

Do you think it is too thick to put thru a FASS at all or should a thermo switch be set up for maybe 200 deg. F?

I got my trans from Blumenthals and they recommended I put in no less than 8 quarts of fluid. I did and it seems to work ok. I had to remove the shifter to fill it. She isn't even 1/2 way filled yet. I have a temp gauge that I will be connecting in the next couple of days. I have set my truck up for pulling my 15-16k 5th wheel. Check my sig and you can see some of what I have done. My goal is longevity thru cooler temps and better parts. I figure fully loaded/wet she is @ 25k. As expensive as these trannys are I don't mind spending the money to set it up correctly. Plus down time is not a realistic option for me, especially since I am coming into my busy season.

Fire at will!

Well, for better of for worse I went ahead and used the paint I already had. It says not to use on surfaces that will be above 200 degrees but i took a chance. From all I have read, these trannies get as hot as 200 +/-. I figured that I already had the paint bought and didn't have time to go to the store, so I took a chance. Worse case scenario, I guess, is that the paint will cook itself off and smell terrible and then I pull it out and clean it up. Not a fan of creating work for myself, but then again, I do kinda enjoy it!Oo.

Long hard pulls on hot days will bring you up to 210-220. I pull across the valley and up into the Sierras in the summer and have seen what every one else is reporting. 8qts of Redline MTL in the 5600 and she shift just fine.

Hope your paint holds up. But what the hell, it's on the dirty side down. you will probably be the only one who sweats how it looks.

I think that 10 micron would work for nv5600 filtration. Equipment I work on commonly uses similar filtration for transmission and powertrain oil systems.

Didn't mean to try to hijack the thread... I just thought there would be some good input on this idea. My goal is to also control the temp while towing. Which does tie into the temp subject. I figure that with a temp switch then I really wouldn't have to worry about it as much. It would be kind of expensive to setup. . but with the cost of these trans... Well... I am sure there is more input to be offered from someone...

C'mon folks... let's hear some more.

That's 1 vote for 10 micron so far.

I didn't use anything special for paint on mine, just some normal gray paint. I don't know what the ratings are on it but it wasn't high temp specific. I have over 300k on mine with lots of towing in the mountains and hills and haven't had any trouble and no burned paint so I would guess you will be just fine.
