Opinions vary, but I would appreciate yours...

Installed Pacbrake - Air leak somewhere

trans fluid

Fireside Dodge has theirs for $10. 95 a quart. I am against the dealer having a monopoly. I have let my fingers do the walking all over the local area and have not found any approved products. Texaco went to Chevron who sold it to Shell or something:confused:. I will try one of the above products (trans fluids). Thanks for the info.

just changed the transmission fluid

After reading all the controversy over which oil to use, and when to change, I decided to replace the fluid in the NV5600.

As my wife and I have just returned from Mexico, pulling a 24' travel trailer, and the rig now has 15,000 miles I was getting concerned over what the original oil might look like.

To my surprise it looked pretty good. I've been pulling the heck out of this truck for the last 10,000 miles and expected to see more brass or blackened transmission fluid. I believe it had plenty of life left in it. Same with the differential by the way.

Given the condition of this oil under heavy loads, hot temps and very steep grades I think I'll just put in what DC recommends. I have found the Pennzoil Syncrhromesh at Autozone for about $5. 00 a quart.

If Dodge ever approves of a synthetic based oil I wouldn't mind changing over. For now though this Synchromesh transmission fluid might just be the stuff.

DC 4761526, Dodge spec MS-9224, Texaco code 1874 MTX is the correct lube. This lube is synthetic verified by the dealer. This is the current lube for our NV5600. I think the earlier spec DC 4874464 was not synthetic. It was superseded in 2000 when DC & New Venture enlarged the input shaft and made other modifications. I figure I will change mine at 50K miles, it's a Mall Cruiser :)

I would not use a visual inspection as a determination of oil condition. By the time it looks bad the damage is already done imo.

I just change all the fluids every 30K so I don't worry on long trips or when I wake up late at night :D

How do you/they know it is synthetic? Does it say synthetic on the bottle? I learned not to believe everything dealers tell you especially when the price goes up on an item.

Would be nice if true, I just hope it is true.

It tastes like synthetic :) I think Dane is right, the fluid is good for 30K when you work it hard and I think it is good for 50K when it's a Mall cruiser. The way most members maintain their trucks, they aren't going to break for lack of maintance. Some members are just more anal than others (not a bad thing) ;)

test drive

Just a follow up on my oil change. After letting the RTV set-up for the night I filled the transmission with the Pennzoil stuff and took it out for a spin. It's still not the smoothest shifting transmission in the world but what can you expect... . this thing is meant to work not play.

The shifting seems a little "crisper" if thats the right word... . not silky smooth but crisp. Really there isn't much that difference. It does go into the proper gear with less hunting around to get it there. I guess over-all I'm glad that it was changed out if only for my piece of mind.

Put Valvoline 85w/140 synthetic blend in the rear end. Again, the oil looked fine but I was expecting the worst. Did a few figure "8's" and checked to make sure the LSD worked. Did a quick start on wet grass and had both wheels engage as they should. I did not need friction modifier with this oil.

Anyway, all looks well with the mighty Ram and of course it performed flawlessly on our vacation south.

Dumb question

I'm getting ready to change the factory fill with Redline MTL, my question is in regards to the RTV and PTO cover gasket. Can you reuse the gasket and if so do you put RTV on it or just the bolts? TIA

Tom

I will soon be switch to Redline MTL because i trust Redline products. Others have relayed their good experiences, and it confirms me faith in it. It may well not be the best, but it has been great for me, and i like their stuff. Your mileage may vary.

As for DC specs, Dodge Specs, or API specs, so my post on this subject

here

Re: Dumb Question?

My 2000 Service manual states to apply sealer to the bolt threads before installing them during a lubricant change. Nothing about RTV and PTO cover gasket?
