My 2001.5 2500 with a NV 5600 transmission is sometimes hard to shift into 3rd gear when the engine is cold
50 degrees. Once it warms it seems to shift better. I had the clutch replaced approx. 5000 miles ago and the
the transmission serviced at the same time.
Also the Dodge Service Manual does not show where the oil fill plug is on the transmission'

What fluid was used? You can't miss the fill plug, left side, large allen head near the pto cover.

Thanks NIsaacs for your rely. I thought that was the fill plug but I wasn't sure. I'll have to check with the trans shop to find out what fluid was used.

Tom,

I can offer what I have recently had done. I purchased a set of TDS pto covers:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/TDS-PTO-Co...192774074364?_trksid=p2385738.m4383.l4275.c10

There technically is no specific drain plug for the NV5600. Just remove the lowest bolt in the pto cover or if you want to install a pto cover that does have a drain plug of sorts but not at the exact proper drain level:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/TDS-PTO-Co...ityMailSmallFlatRateBox!38425!US!-1:rk:9:pf:0

I went with the first pto cover, the other one just has too much going on that I will never use.

If you look at the pto cover, it raise the fill port up to a significantly higher level to raise the oil fill level and thus better lubricate I believe it is the #5 aft shaft bearing in the NV5600.

Make sure to buy 2 pto cover gaskets with each set of pto covers. I hate the silicone sealant mess Dodge uses.

With respect to cold shifting performance quality, I noticed this when I fill the NV5600 on my truck with half SAE 50 synthetic transmission oil & half Amsoil MTF (previous fill was Pennzoil Synchromesh). It can be a bit stiff shifting on cold mornings but after driving a few miles or allowing the truck to idle with the transfer case in neutral and transmission in 4th gear, the transmission shifts very smooth.

On the wife's truck, hers has about double the mileage as mine (about 87,900) and the 3rd gear shift is always very tricky and must be done slowing with a hesitation in between gears. I had the TDS pto cover installed on her NV5600 and had it filled with Redline 75W80 synthetic transmission oil. I must say this oil made a HUGE improvement in how her transmission shifts. Cody at Super Stick Transmissions gave me these suggestions. He told me that the Redline was his preferred NV5600 fill but had up until recently been using SAE 50 synthetic and experimenting with various blends.

I am going to observe how my truck shifts over the Summer and if it continues to have the cold stiff shifting issue, I will probably change my truck over to the Redline too.

The Redline oil DOES meet the Chrysler MS-9224 specification requirement.

Chief, thanks for your input. I'll drain my trans to see how much oil is in it. According to the Dodge service manual it should be 9.5 pts.

When I change mine with the bottom pto cover bolt drain, it will hold 1 gallon. This is with the rear axle on 6" blocks to level out the transmission. Every other oil change I will pull the cover and mop out all the oil in the bottom and clean the magnet. Then it will hold about 9 pints. I change mine every 36k, keep it clean and full. I don't over fill and have 326k on it. I use 15/40 diesel engine oil. The recommended oil is Pennzoil synchromesh.

AMZ/OIL recommends
Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid 5W-30 for the 5600

I used what was recommended on my 98 with 4500 and it shifted GREAT in all weather conditions.

Nick, maybe I'm not reading right but do you use 15/40 engine oil in your NV5600!?

Cummins12v98 Thanks for your reply. The trans shop that replaced my clutch and serviced the trans has offered to reservice the trans for free.
I guess I'll find out!

I don't think you can go wrong with either the Redline MTL 75W80 GL-4 GEAR OIL or the Amsoil
Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid 5W-30

Both work great. I buy them in the 5 gallon pail to save a few bucks and have some leftover for the next transmission oil change down the road.

The Redline MTL seemed more vicious than the Amsoil MTF but it sure did make a heck of an improvement in the wife's truck shifting.

When I had my NV5600 rebuilt by Blumenthal, actually they replaced it with an upgraded one they had on the shelf (larger input shaft, modified rear bearing for oiling, etc), they used their own blend of fluid. They also said they always put in at least 1 quart more than specs to make sure rear bearing gets lubed properly. They also said the fluid should be changed every 30K miles.
