Hmmmm... A customer at the shop I work for did it. . he put an NV4500 in place of a getrag. He said it reqired a different clutch and pressure plate, bell housing, starter and modifications to the driveline and exhaust, with some fabrication needed for a mount somewhere.

He bought all the parts from someone who switched a truck to auto from 5 speed, because he had become physically impaired.

He even put on the 12cm2 wastegated housing from same truck.

I might be out on a limb here but I believe the Getrag is a better trans than the NV 4500. The design and overhaul procedure are much more simple. What I heard happen was that originally Getrag would not supply parts for rebuid because essentially they thought it could/would not be done right in the field. So for a while you had to buy a whole trans and then people started to scream bloody murder about the cost and Getrag gave in and started supplying parts. I have seen/experienced way more bogus "remanufacturing" than I want to. And whoever said "if you want it done right you have to do it yourself" was right on. It is almost impossible to get a BY THE BOOK, FACTORY PARTS AND PROCEDURE rebuid.
Dodge gets their rebuilds from "approved" (what a joke that is) suppliers.

There has to be someone who can PROPERLY rebuild a Getrag G360 in a CLEAN place, with GOOD parts, who owns, properly maintains and knows how to use the measuring equipment needed for the job.
WHERE ARE YOU?

Hey Mike!

There was a great article in Fall 1999 TDR (page #124) about Quad 4X4 in Roberts MT. that is doing NVG4500HD (new) installations & kits for our trucks. This same article is displayed in the "Featured Articles" side of the TDR Members Only forum. I tried to go into that side this morning to ensure that it's still there but couldn't get the password to work. Check it out if you can get in!

Their number is (406)446-2427 or just drop by next time you're "Hotshotting" through MT.

Also, in the same issue (page #46) Rod Thompson (435-458-3868) is raving about his NVG4500 conversion done by Blumenthal's in Oklahoma City (888-236-4800). Do you have a load going that way soon?

One last thing, same issue (page #47) Mark Chalkly is talking about being one of the first to install the new 6 speed NVG5600.

Maybe you need to borrow a back issue from a bud or email me and I'll fax you the pages!

Good Luck... ..... Keeno

Mark 93,
It's nice to see someone not afraid to tackle the rebuild of these trannies. Every shop in town says exactly what you stated, you have to get a "new" #ad
rebuild. I didn't think that rebuilding a gearbox would be too tuff! I mean a few ball bearings and gears? All you need is a good shop thats clean and a good press, maybe an induction bearing heater to get them on easier.
I hope I don't have to rebuild soon, but when the time comes, you'll probably hear from me. #ad

Hi Guys
My rebuilder says that the NV4500HD has it's own list of problems so you might be to going from the frying pan into the fire. Thats the main reason I elected to stay with the Getrag. I figure that by the time this one wears out the NV5600 might be a better swap.
Since "we are our own warranties" I plan on switching fluids to Pennzoil "Pennzane" 5W50
fully synthetic. It should give you the low viscosity lubrication necessary for the Getrag and hold up better under heat and load.
Happy Trails

Thanks everyone for the advice and comments. Not sure which route I'll take at this point in time. Thanks again, Mike
