Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) nv241 vs. np205

How do these two t-cases compare? Would the 205 be any better behind the nv5600?

The NP205 is all gears with a cast iron case, low range is 2-1 ratio. Also in the Dodge and Chevy application is was used with a right hand front differential.



The NV241 has a chain for the front drive, aluminum case and 2. 7-1 low range ratio, left hand front differential.

so I take it the 205 is stronger? Why did dodge do away with them? Weren't they in the 1st gen trucks?

The 205 is very heavy compared to the 241 and has a 2:1 vs 2. 7:1 gear reduction. I guess Dodge considered the 205 overkill for our trucks, and as not to many have "grenaded" their T-Case, their probably right. The gear reduction (although probably acceptable behind a Diesel) was a bit underrated (in my opinion) behind a gas engine. The NP 208, NP (NVG) 241, and now NP (NVG) 271 are steps in the right direction for most of us. For those serious rock crawlers/ 4x4er's the Atlas II or a twin stick dual T-Case setup is the way to go.

This is a bulletproof combo. NEVER, EVER, seen a 205 blow up. If I were to build a truck it's what I would go with. Ford used the 205 in left side diffs for YEARS!!!
