Hi all,

Ok just did a head gasket and ARP studs a week ago (dam my arms are still tired) first time out and bang no 5th gear

I ordered a repair kit (see below) and the factory updated nut do I need to get a new gear as well as the TSB listed a gear part number or will I be able to reuse my original one (as long as it is not damaged

http://fifthgearrepair.com/installation.html

Has anyone used this fix?

Thanks,

I would get a new gear because it gets wear to and that will cause you to lose it again the best fix is to do a fully splined shaft and new Nut and geAR i also use plenty of red loctite on the splines of the shaft and on the nut

Call SOURCE Automotive 1-866-211-1533 in Clackamas Oregon they have a 5th gear nut retainer that is fail safe. No need for the main shaft replacement.

Hi Jim, I used the 5th gear nut retainer from fifthgearrepair.com in my dad's '99 4x4 drw with great success. There was no damage to gear or shaft. Just cleaned nut and shaft, use lock tight, torqued nut, install retainer

Hi all,

Yep got it done over the weekend took about 5 hours working at a moderate pace, worst part was getting the tabs lined up with the nut as I only had the wrench for the nut so keep rotating the engine trying to tighten a bit more to get the tabs aligned

Thanks all would suggest this kit as it looks pretty sound idea on keeping the nut from backing off

Regards

So you used the fifthgearrepair kit then? and it worked as described?

If the smooth part of the shaft hasn't been hammered by the splines of the gear, a better nut retainer may work for you. OTOH, if the gear can rock on the shaft because of indentations where the splines hit the smooth area, the gear will eventually "slide hammer" the threads of the nut, shear the threads, and spit off the new nut.

Yes it appears to be asound design and used that kit bascially a splined cup that has 4 tangs that you align to the nuts driving lugs so will have to either strip out the splines, nut or new cup or like the other person said shaft and even then it would take a lot as it would have to seperate the trans and t-case or break the adaptor

Regards,

Here is a picture of the retainer it is not a nut
