Bought a 96 5spd 12V 2WD last week in Baton Rouge.

Hooked a trailer to it and starting towing my 98 home. Halfway through MO we lost 5th gear.

Got it in the shop and had a new updated 5th gear nut sent. Turns out it was already fixed. . Several times apparently.

The splines are completely stripped and you can turn the gear on the shaft easily.

Whos Reman should I get?

Standard Trans or Blumenthals?

I plan on getting a Con Ofe Clutch with the larger flywheel, along with a 1 3/8" shaft.

This truck is a TOW vehicle mainly. . I only want to do this once.

I've read up on Quad's stuff and it sure is $$$$$ pricey. . does the fully splined main shaft cure most 5th gear issues?

Thanks in advance.

Give Scheid a call. Just got mine from them, no fully splined mainshaft, but did have all the updates. Haisley does the transmissions for Scheid. Decent price.

I have Quad 4X4's Torque King main shaft in a new NV4500 transmission. It was put in exactly 1 year ago and no problems, even towing in 5th.

For me, it was worth the extra expense due to the power upgrades I have.

If you were a stock or "almost" stock and pulled a heavy camper, I just say get a regular new or rebuilt 4500. But with the mods you have you can be assured you'll be looking for something quite stout ... and a rebuild uses the same old tired gear on a new main shaft.

If your planning on keeping the truck for a few more years, you may want to give Dan the Gear Man a call at Quad 4X4.

I won't be modding the 96 to the level of my 98 12valve...

We're looking at between 375 & 400HP. . Just to tow my truck to pulls etc.

Garrett,

Type in nv4500 on ebay.

I found like 4 or 5 2wd versions for like $800 no core.

Justin, I tried that. Thanks for the suggestion, but

I don't want to buy something that I'll be tearing out to fix 5th gear half way through next years sled pulling season.

standard transmission has a decent deal on their fully splined mainshaft kit. I believe its less than $300. Or the entire transmission rebuild kit is $600. They might be able build one up for you too.
