Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Nv4500 5th Gear Nut

I'm rebuilding a NV4500 5 speed and the 5th gear is held on with a split nut with a tightening cross bolt. Does anyone know the procedure for tightening the nut on installation? Do you torque it down first and then tighten the cross bolt or tighten the cross bolt to a predetermined amount and then torque the split nut?

Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know for sure as the one I did had the set screws but if I were doing it I would snug the cross bolt down to a point where it just starts to pinch but will still allow the nut to turn fairly easy. I would then torque the nut and then the cross bolt.
