Well, I followed all the rules, not towing in 5th over 20psi, overfilling a quart past full, etc. But, I'm having issues. Have around 107k miles and I'm popping out of 5th gear when coasting or on my exhaust brake. It pulls fine under load and doesn't pop out of gear usually when not towing. But when I'm towing and let off the gas when the transmission's hot it pops out almost immediately. If I'm on the exhaust brake towing or empty it pops out. If the truck is not towing and running cool around town, no issues. 5th gear is whining when cold but not when hot and it's very faint.

Is this the nut problem? It didn't sound like the normal loss of 5th gear that I've read about? Is this something else or just the normal issues?

Wish I had a 5600 :{

get ready for trans work

i put 380K on my 2000 200K with it w/ mods listed

smoked trans 4-5 times usually lasts 50-60K (keep in mind i pull 6-7% grades 5-10miles long at least twice a day in 5th empty or with 10K trailer)

that trans runs hot for some reason after doing all the mods (standard tran/gear in TX) and fast coolers it went 80K pulling hard in 5th (nothing worse then passing a ferd or duramax on a grade wound out in 4th)

i think the coolers are the ticket best money ive spent i think

BTW every time i tore the trans down everything was covered in burnt oil

If I were a betting man, I'd say it's not the nut problem, but I'm no expert... When mine failed on my '98, once the nut came off, 5th gear didn't work at all anymore. If by chance it is the nut failure though, it's not all that hard to fix... I repaired mine on a Saturday afternoon. You basically remove the tail shaft housing of the trans, and 5th gear/nut is staring you in the face.
