I wanted to know what evryone thinks about the fast coolers that are available for the NV4500s. Are they really necessary and do they improve the life of the transmission? I also was curious about that filter kit that Geno's Garage sells as well as those fast coolers. Is that a good idea or upgrade to have on the transmission? Opinions on these products from the experienced would be greatly appreicated.

Thanks, Joe

I put the coolers on and like them. I don't have a trans gauge installed but sure liked the idea of adding two quarts of extra fluid to the transmission.

Yeah, thats what interested me into purchasing the coolers, but are the really necessary? I would think they would help out in really hot weather like in Arizona or some place like that. I would also think that if New Venture had heat issues with their transmission's then they would have them installed at the factory or recommend to have them installed in hot weather applications.

I think anything that adds lube capacity to the trans is a good thing. I have the filter setup on my truck- I think it works OK. I'd like to put a FastCooler on the other side, but I don't think they can be purchased individually (can't use the cooler & the filter on the same side).

Not necessary if you maintain the transmission / drive sensibly, and use a quality high performance lubricant such as a synthetic.

The coolers will have about the same payback as that of a bypass engine oil filter. Hard to jsutify but if you feel better, then invest in them.

Running RP, a friend of mine has 355K plus on his 96 NV4500 4X4 without the coolers. So no, they are not necessary.

Cheers,

PS - Hi Bill

I have both a trans temp gage and a trans cooler mounted in front of the truck. This system has been installed for 5 years and is controlled two ways... a temp switch mounted on the transmission inspection plate and a manual switch under the dash. I tow 23,000 lbs (total weight all vehicles) often in both summer and winter.

Here is what happens... . In summer with load trans runs about 150 degrees cooler off. On grades will heat up to about 250 cooler off. . turn it on and temp drops to 180 or less... I always tow in direct (4th gear) and use the GV overdrive for 5th. If you want to rawly see some heat tow in 5th gear with overdrive off and watch the temp gage climb. Truck has 90k on th clock and clutch and transmission have never been worked on. No 5th gear nut problems to date... If you use your 5th gear to tow heavy loads you will heat the transmission.

Works for me.
