Wrecked truck going cheap

For your health and sanity......

Watch out here folks. I have yet to complete my getrag>nv4500 conversion due to many complications, and I am using the advanced adaptors kit :-{} I plan to write a whole essay on this struggle over on the first generation forum if I ever get my truck on the road again

Important notice:

First, you must clearance this bellhousing so it will fit around the flywheel. Poor casting quality is passed right on down the line to guess who... you, the customer.

Next, this is my latest hold up which really smokes my rear end. There was of course no notice of this in the so called instructions either, but get ready... . the bearing retainer on the nv4500, and the hole on the bellhousing only have . 003" of an inch clearance. This of course makes the difficult job of installng the transmission, impossiable. So, yeah, my bellhousing which I paid my dues for is now getting modified at the machine shop so that it can now perform it's original purpose :(

Sorry for the rant, may be it will save you all some time and money,

Russell

You might call Std. Trans at 800-std-tran for info on their kit. Mike Patton (owner) described it to me and it sounded pretty painless and not too expensive. Seemed like a viable alternative if you Getrag has "bit the dust. "

I bought my kit from Quad 4X4 in Roberts Mt and it was an easy installation - done in my driveway! I did modify the rear crossmember (to better straight-pipe the exhaust) and had to shorten the driveline 6. 5 inches. I used the rear transmission mount from a 1996 Dodge. BTW the driveline only has to be shortened on the 2 by's. Dan at Quad 4X4 also supplied a video. :)

Are they using this diameter to align the trans to the bellhousing? Or does it use another method, such as dowel pins?

It may be, and I may be fireing up an experiment when I get this thing on the road, but there was no way that thing was fitting without some material being removed. I just measured what the clearance was for the getrag, and I made the Advanced Adaptors bellhousing have the same clearance in respect to the bearing retainer.

Also, I did order this kit from standard transmission. Their kit is simply their transmission, and advanced adaptors kit shipped from their headquarters.

Hope this helps,

Russell

It did work :) And I don't think that it was too lose. It still took some shoving and fine tuning to get it lined up, but once it was we could push the transmission all the way up against the bellhousing. It cost $75 to get the hole machined out a little, but I think it was worth it. I just don't have a nice lift, transmission jack, and all of the sweet little tools to deal with tight tolerances. I let you all know if any of this becomes a problem.

Try putting the transmission up close and then installing bolts about 3" long to align it. With all of the bolts there to align it, the transmission will usually slip right in. Never try to suck it in by tightening bolts.
