I have dropped my NV4500 3 times in the past 3 years, I broke 3rd gear twice and put new bearings and synchros in last year.

Last week i lost 5th not because of the nut but because of the O/D clutch gear splines broke. So yesterday i put the back of the case back together with the new O/D gear.

Well now 5th grinds ever so slightly and its hard to get in gear from a dead stop and somtimes hard to downshift if i can at all.

What is with this?? Is anyone else breaking theres??

Im pushing about 500-550 horse, i know there are a lot of other trucks out there that are pushing more. WHAT GIVES???

Michael

that is the way these things are. i have twisted the main shaft in two, stripped 3rd off the main, stripped 3rd off the counter, and just as you lost 5th(not due to the nut). I hate it, but the 6 speeds dont really survive much better. I looked into finding a medium duty transmission, but you have to have an sae 2 bell housing for the most part. plus the drive line and transfer case issues. i just dont have that kinda money. here is the one i was looking at. I have no idea if it would even work but it is deffinately rated higher than the 5'er. Wishful thinkin proly

I beat up mine pretty good. Just one of the failures was the fifth gear clutch hub. I broke a spline or two.

Mike, I'm just down the road from you. I probably eyeballed your truck going down the road.

If you need tools or a hand, just give me a shout!

I put the southbend 3850 ceramic DD in. i know it puts alot on the trans but even before that i had the con-fe and i was blowing up the trans.

I wonder what is involved in putting an AUTOMATIC :D in?? has any one done that and could i get some info (computer, crossmember, drivshafts ect. )

Dtroy where are you located??

NBowlin Do you think that trans will be ok on the street/highway i have 3. 55's i wonder what kind of RPM's ill see?? also ill have to check the bellhousing

I'm near the West Pittston border. I'd say Harding, but sometimes people have never heard of it.

In the warmer weather we take the back way through Falls/Mill City/Dalton to go to the nursery in Chinchilla. We come down off the mountain by the store that sells horse tack etc. .

Any other TDR members nearby???

We can start the un-official NEPA TDR Chapter. :-laf

ya troy i know right were you are talking about, I live by the turnpike toll booth in the summit,so close i could throw apples on the toll booth roof(i know that from expereince when i was younger:))

I took the CS exit one day after I had been daydreaming after a long drive and missed the Pittston exit. They didn't have the Keyser Ave. exit at the time.

I went to the Jim Dandy's up there. I was dating a girl from Moscow so we swung by CS.

This summer I was at the nursery a lot with my cousin and his third gen. He makes his deliveries using a dump trailer. No mods on his truck. Believe me, I've tried to talk him into it. I think he's a skeered! :)

I had my truck up there once this summer. I was putzing through stop and go traffic going up the hill. I was next to a snob in a new Beamer with the top down and a cell phone stuck to her head. She kept looking over. I don't think she liked being next to the noisy Cummins. I revved it up a few times. I was making a left and as she went by me, she was laying into the horn. :p

when you say 500-550 hp is that to the wheels or? I havent been able to find exactly what truck Im looking for as of yet, however I was looking for a manual trans 12v 97-98ish, and this is a bit discouraging because I was looking to be around that HP range... . how is it that guys are putting 800hp to the wheels in 5 speeds, but I read some people around the 500hp range have problems?

I was thinking of getting one from quad 4X4(torque king) and have them install one of the 1 3/8 inputs at the same time, but now Im scared to even find a stick truck... .

Great to finally find a few from NE PA! In-laws are from East End W-B... Definately can help with wrenching (anything to get away for a few hours) :-laf

Well alright. . When I was a wee little lad we lived in W-B in the Heights section.

As far as wrenching goes, thanks for the offer. I could've used a hand last year when I was struggling to get my 5 speed in and out. :)

vssman, your are an official honorary member of the Unofficial NEPA TDR Chapter. :-laf

I will have to tap you on the shoulders with a sword... better yet, with a Snap-On torque wrench!

Who else is around?

Mike, I didn't mean to hijack your thread. Should I count you as the third member?

The 3rd member :{ I think you and I should be 1 and 2 lol we started this.

NIRO, I think what is happening to my trannys is that i like to dragrace on the street a little to much and shift very fast, especilly with the short throw shifter I made that doesnt help the situation. What is happening is once its in gear im laying into the throttle, They call it shock loading. (NOT GOOD HEHE) I guess what im trying to say is these transmissions are not suppose to be shifting this quick and i keep learning my lesson over and over. Other than that im sure these trannys are fine, especially the tourque king i heard a lot of good things about quad 4X4

Michael

Oooops... . You're right about that. Okay, you've been bumped to the number two position. :)

For anyone that's curious about the NV failures, I will try to post some pics of failed parts.

If you rebuild your own transmission, thoroughly inspect ALL of the components before you place your parts order.

Otherwise you might end up spending a lot of time waiting for parts to show up in different shipments.

Not to keep bothering you with this, but how much is alot of drag racing? The problem is Im not getting the truck for a tow vehicle lol, its my everyday and sleeper as well

with the torque king and their 5th gear, they told me it will never come off, is there any way to upgrade the 3rd gear like you were stating you had the problem with?

just curious too, how did you get a short shifter on a 97 truck? arent they only for the 98s+, I assume you swapped out the top half of the transmission on the rebuild?

you got any pics or anyting either of your truck, Id really like to see. .

Ive been debating the under 98s just cause of the interiors, but Im thinking of maybe finding one and swapping to one of the leather interiors since they look alot nicer then the regular cloth. .

thanks alot and sorry for all the questions

auto swap

My 5 speed went out on my and i put a auto in it place not a hard swap just computer, wiring harness, all shifting linkage, kicked down cable, steering col. and the coupler in the tranfer case. different drive shafts front and rear. same cross menber. I got all the stuff for 700 dollar trans and all, out of a salvage yard.

how hard would the swap be the other way auto to 5spd, would you happen to have any of the old 5spd parts?

I felt bad about jacking Mike's thread, so I started a NEPA TDR club poll in the local and regional chapters & events area.

Mike and vssman, don't forget to vote!

First, Niro your not bothering me :)

How much dragraceing am i doing? Well everytime Im on the ST. Im looking around to show off my 15 second 7000LB black smoke bellowing truck :-laf

As for quad 4X4's nut coming off, i dont think youll have a problem after you put it on. Its easy you dont even have to drop the trans. because its on the back of the case. The only prob. you might have is gettin the the nut to the proper torque spec you might need two people.

I dont know anyone that really upgrades the the strength of the gears or countershaft but i do know that SouthBendClutch has another comp. that does cryogenics. they somehow freeze the parts with Liquid Nitrogen to strenthen themCryostrengh

When i ordered my transmission from Blumenthal I ordered a 97 trans and i think they sent me a late 97 early 98 becauseBD's short throw shifter doesnt fit.

Ill get some pix for you

Michael

I would say remember the 4500 was designed for less than 500 lbs of torque. I think any over that, and we're pushing our luck anyway. I'm not sure the 5600 is that much better. Still that's probably what I'll go to next.
