I went to the shop tonight to change the exhaust springs on my crew cab. When I placed the tuning tool in the bellhousing to turn the motor to #1 TDC, it would not go in! After an hour of looking at my 92 service truck with the auto, looking at the original Getrag bellhousing and sticking my skinny head up between the frame and the block, I realized the the bellhousing had not even been machined at all for the clearance of the tool! I had to grind it out about . 060 or so before the tool would even fit in. This would have been no problem if I had checked the fit BEFORE I had installed the motor in the truck. FUDGE!!! Anyone who has made this swap and has not set the valves, beware. I am going to call the guy I got the bellhousing from and tell him to check this before he sends any more out. It was not a very productive day at the shop. Tommorrow will be much better, I'm going fishing instead!

Mark, sorry to hear that. Both my conversions were done @ Quad 4x4 in Mt. Dan, supplys different bellhousings so never to encounter this. Mike

I'm considering a similar installation (NV4500 behind older 12V). Does this require a "special" bellhousing as opposed to just a stock Dodge bellhousing from '94-up? If this is a modified piece, who should I NOT get one from?

I am prety sure that it takes the special bellhousing only. I got mine from Blue Chip. He has been very helpful in all my conversion stuff. I wonder if they are all made by the same guy. Mine would have been easy to fix if it was not in hte truck. Just check it before you bolt it up.

It's not that big of a deal (unless the bellhousing is already installed) Just clearance the hole for the barring tool while installing the housing. It is usualy just a little off, but enough to not let the barring tool in. It's easier to set the valves with the alt. nut anyway!?

What do you mean, easier with the alt nut. You mean I don't have to crawl on the ground and bump my head on the frame anymore? Will the motor turn over using just the alt nut?
