Greetings, I've had CTD for years but all have been auto's until now. I've got a 95 5 spd and really love it. My question is what is the fluid change procedure for that trans. I've done a search but to no avail. I would also like to now what type of fluid to use and where to get it. I've read in the searches that there is only one or two types to use but difficult to get. Is there a filter involved ect. Thanks for the responces and Happy Holidays ,Brian

Brian, get the truck up to operating temp and drain the fluid. I personally leave it sit over night with the keys out of it. Refill with castrol syntorq or royal purple syncromax, penzoil syncromesh. Just make sure it is recommended for your trans, because of the recommended and over fill the trans one qt past the fill hole on the side, easiest way is to add through the shifter hole. The reason for the additional qt is for extra lube to the inputshaft bearing. There are companies that offer a add on filter kit that bolts on the pto plate, I got mine from quad 4x4. Never a bad idea for extra protection!

Yeah add the coolers Genos has them too the higher plug lets you over fill without pulling the shifter cover. I think I saw the syncromesh at autozone not 100% sure if its the right stuff I bought my oil from quad 4x4 it aint cheap but after reading some of the disaster stories on here it is all I will use (castrol syntorq)

Just make sure what ever fluid you decide to use is a GL-4 rated.

The GL-5 stuff you can find all day at the parts store but from what I've read its hard on the brass parts. I just went to the dealer. SAE 75-85 Synthetic.

just looked at the penzoil site syncromesh is not the same, I would stick with the proper stuff from the dealer or quad 4x4 just see who has it cheaper

Standard Transmission used to sell a gallon (what it normally holds) of syntorq for about $50. They have started using the Amsoil equilavent, and in my transmission it has been fine. 95K on the last rebuild with no issues. If you go with the filter from Genos you can't use the Fast coolers. I roll my truck up on ramps under the right side tires, front and rear, then drain the oil by removing one of the PTO cover bolts on the bottom left side. Refilling with the truck tilted allows about another 1/2 qt before the oil starts dripping out of the filler hole. I change the oil every 50k miles.

I am one of those that did not know better and went with NAPA's recommendation to use GL-5 Valvoline syn fluid. After a week my shifting got knotchy and was harder to engage. I posted a thread and was told to drain it and I replaced it with Quad 4X4's Castrol Syntork GL-4 (don't use Castrol Syntech! it's not the same). It fixed my problem.

You drain the fluid on the passenger side of transmission by removing the bottom bolt of the rectangular PTO cover. You fill thru a large pipe plug with 3/8 inch allen wrench as I recall. It is above and to left I believe of the PTO cover.

That's a good idea Games to raise the right side so the transmission can be overfilled. I did not realize it needed overfilled.

It cost between $25-$27 a quart at my dealers and $70 a gallon plus shipping at Quard 4x4. I have heard some use the Amsoil product that is GL-4 rated for the New Venture 4500.

I have been using the Amsoil in two nv4500's with good luck. I have been putting 30k and 40k miles on them between changing and the oil looks good when it is drained. They seem to shift better after a oil change.
