For those of you that have changed your transmission fluid, do you think it needed it? What did it look like when it came out? How much metallic material? Number of miles? Thanks.

Vaman... If you want to see how your trans fluid is, grab a sample and have it analyzed.

A NVG Rep at the last TDR Nationals said while DC does not recomend changing the fluid, he recomended a change every 50k.

Thanks for the info. It's pretty expensive but I'll probably just change it. Chrysler wants 25 bucks a quart (4 quarts... I believe it's Castrol Syntorque). Speaking of which, they tried to sell me Castrol Syntec to put in it and... tried to sell me friction modifier for my FRONT axle. Nice guys but the list goes on and on... On a slightly different subject. Anyone know where I can get some info on that 5th gear nut problem?

You can also try standard transmission's web site for info on the 5th gear fix and purchasing the Castrol Syntorq fluid.

When the above member said DC does not reccomend changing the transmission fluid, do you mean they say its bad to change it?, or that it is not nessecary?

DC says you are not required to change it. That puts them out of the warranty picture. They require a certain type of fluid and in order to not HAVE to give you their specific type of fluid they say no change is required.

Fortunatley the NVG 5600 fluid from Dodge is only $10. 50 a quart with the same change schedule... ...

Oh yeah, the NVG 5600 and the 3500 take the same fluid..... Pete

Pete,
3500? What do you mean?

The 5600 6spd takes a different lube than the 4500 5spd.

When they say don't change it, they mean it will live to out of warranty.
I saw mine at 26,000, no way do you want yours going 100,000.
I want mine to live well past warranty, I'm changin it.

My NVG 5600 shifted a good bit smoother after I changed the fluid at 10K miles. There was a noticeable amout of metal particle sheen in the drained factory oil.

Just to add my two cents here, let me tell you about my experiance with Castrol Syntorq GL5 which is not recommended but is easy to find.

I was changing all my gear oils out to Amsoil and somehow came up 4 qts short. Had my wife pick up the GL5 on her way home as it was a Sunday and my Amsoil source was not available. After talking with other owners about the GL5, I kept putting off changing it, thinking it would not hurt. I noticed early on how it would be hard to shift from 1st to 2nd when cold. Recently I noticed it was getting harder to shift period so I changed out to the Amsoil 2000. Difference was immediately noticeable. At 100k with a bunch of pulling, I figure if I have hastened the transmission's demise, o'well.

Gene, the NV3500 is used in the Dakota and Ram 1500's.

Most of the users have agreed on about 30,000 mile drains, or 1 year. Does not hurt to put that little Eaton filter on it too.

Baby that transmission, it HURTS to fix it.
www.enterpriseengine.com in Ohio can tell about all the fixes for that transmission.

I changed my 5-speed fluid at 78K. I noticed it was cloudy, but was not discolored. I put Amsoil 2000 back in. I notice it shifts a little smother, but this may be my imagination, but its not any harder to shift! At any rate, it was $70. 00 cheaper then the factory gold.

This comes out to about 3 changes of amsoil cost a little less them 1 change of factory fluid.

I have a 96 Dakota but it is the auto #ad
I wish it had that baby transmission ! But it does have the 318
