What is the difference in the regular NV4500 and the HD, and the 241 transfer case and the HD. I had to go straight to the dealer and have my vin numbers ran to find the right transfer case seal for my truck and no one else could get i,because my truck had to have the big seal. ouch it was expensive.

I believe the 4500HD was only in the V10 and CTD... bigger input shaft and output shaft than a regular 4500.

The transfercase... the HD has a slightly wider chain and also has a PTO "port".

so why do some of the CTD's have a small tail shaft and some have a big tail shaft. Can you get both the regular or the hd or is the hd a special order?

I believe you can only get the NV4500HD behind the CTD. You can get either the 241SD or 241HD behind that... I believe the majority of the HDs were behind the manual and behind autos with the "snow plow prep package".

I have never seen a "small" or "large" tailshaft difference within a model year... all the ones I have ever looked at were about 2. 5inches in diameter... the early ones were smaller, but there again that was "early" versus "late".

And FYI, most parts houses only list parts for the "gas" version of the 2500/3500 trucks as far as drivetrain... we ran into that problem too.

ok that would explain why it was different from my friends 96 and my 00, but the parts store had told me that my truck called for the same one as the 96 so thats why i thought they was different.

DC has yet to release that part to the aftermarket... so they just "update" their books by copying the previous years information... we ran into the same thing looking for the same seal.

I get one of those seal in every trans rebuild kit I buy. Prolly got four of them on the shelf. The parts stores have them too but you have to find a guy that knowshow to read the books.

I ran into the same thing getting a rear seal for my Nv4500. The parts houses carried a seal for my make and model, but it was never big enough. I found that out after I already had the old seal out, so I straitened it out and put the old one back in. Believe it or not it didn't leak as bad.

This however is a terrible practice for an Auto Maker. I work as an Engineer for a popular Japanese transplant and very rarely are changes made during mid model year that aren't interchangible.
