Does anyone happen to know what the bearing clearance is on the main shaft in the NV4500 transmission. Also those that have replaced the main shaft what did you use to seal the front bearing retainer/ throwout bearing guide.

Are you refering to Mainshaft endplay? If so the endplay is . 002-. 006 thousands of a inch(1998 dodge factory manual). Setting it close to . 002 really keeps the maindrive steady(saves pilot bearing). I set mine at . 001 when I put the fully splined mainshaft in my NV4500.

If you refering to bearing clearance on the journals I don't know.

I just measured the new shaft and compared journal diameters to the old shaft to make sure there was not a production mistake.

As far as sealer between the front bearing retainer and transmission case I used Black RTV and Loctite on the bolt threads. I think the manual gives the name or number for the Mopar sealer if you want to go "by the book".

Hope this helps,

Kent

There are tapered roller bearings inside the front bearing retainer and in front of 5th gear, on the input and mainshaft respectively. There is a pocket bearing inside the input shaft/4th gear where the nose of the mainshaft bears, and a flat bearing between the mainshaft and the input. The mainshaft endplay is set with shims under the bearing retainer just forward of 5th gear. In a repair situation, you can fix endplay where the front bearing retainer bolts to the main case.

Does the Goo have a Part Number

I use the Mopar red goo on the retainer and the main case to tail housing.

Joe: When I ask for "gray goo" at the Cummins parts counter, they know exactly what I mean. If I ask for "red goo" at the Dodge parts desk, will they do as well?
