Time to replace the transmission/transfer case lube and was wondering ... for the transmission ... what happened to the Series 2000 75/90w AMSOil on their website?

Its no longer offered! That is what I have in there now ... so should I switch back to Syntorque or is AMSOil offering some GL-4 replacement for the Series 2000 oil?

Also, is the AMSOil regular Synthetic ATF fine for the 241 transfercase?

Compatibility?

Are those new Amsoil lubes compatible with the Series 2000? I have a couple quarts of the 2000 left and would hate to throw them out. :{

Willyslover ... yes I am aware now after reading many posts. Also I have received a response from Amsoil about the demise of the Series 2000 gear oil. Amsoil replaced this gear lube with their new Sever Gear Extream Presure (EP) SVG 75w-90 oil which is a GL-5 rated oil, below is the response from Amsoil. I will be using Syntorc from now on but Amsoil in everything else.

Anyone using Amsoil now in their 4500 should read THIS before their next transmission fluid change.

Thank you for contacting AMSOIL with your concerns.

In response to your inquiry, AMSOIL Synthetic Severe Gear 75W90 Gear Lube (SVG) does replace AMSOIL Series 2000 75W90 Synthetic Gear Lube (TGR). However, TGR was rated GL-2 through GL-5 and SVG is straight GL-5 only, so we are not recommending SVG for anything but GL-5 applications.

In applications such as this that request an API GL-4 rated gear lube, we suggest the use of our AMSOIL Synthetic 80W90 Gear Lube (AGT).

AMSOIL Synthetic 80W90 Gear Lube (AGT) is sold in gallon size containers and larger. If more convenient, our AMSOIL Synthetic 80W90 Lower Unit Gear Lube (ALU) may also be used. It is available in smaller containers including quarts. It may be used in any application that AGT is used in. These are both straight GL-4 products.

Thank you again for the opportunity to respond to your concerns. As always, please feel free to contact us again if we can be of further assistance.

Sincerely,

Jim Van

I wish they would have told us that, I would have stocked up on the Series 2000. From my exprience, it kicked tail in the NV 4500.

I put the last I had in a month ago.

I'll try the 80-90 and report back in the future.

I'll change it to a 6 speed before I put Syntorq back in. Or even try Redline.

I put in the ams svg75w90 about 2 wks ago. Ams told me they recommend it for the nv4500 and no gl5 issues. It's a little stiffer shifting, when cold, than the castrol but overall it seems fine. I believe the gl5 is only a problem at high heat - like Phx in the summer. I think it's time to call them again! Craig

Sled Puller, have you called the warehouse in PA? I think they still might have some 2000 left in stock. Otherwise, a call to Roger might locate you some sitting in another location.

The 80w-90 will work just in the 4500, and it's cheaper. I've had a number of guys go with the 80w-90, and have had no problems.

Try the search feature, we got into some detailed argu. , discussions over the last 4 years, on this board. ;)

The 80W-90 they are reccommending now, I have no idea, never used/sold a qt of it.

Well, what ever the argument, I have already ordered a gallon of the Castrol and will be puting it in after the new year. But have order Amsoil Syn. ATF for the transfer case. I just don't want to chance it using this new 80w-90 stuff. Maybe next time after I hear some results down the road, but not now.

The 80-90 is not new. Severe Gear 75-90 is the new one. Series 2000 75-90 is the discontinued one.

Gets confusing, don't it?

Whatever you put in, change it at 1 year. :)

Thoroughly confusing

The online AMSOIL reference guide says they have no product for the NV4500. Yet they offer a 80w90 GL4 product. The old Series 2000 75w90 was rated GL2-5. So why was it so good? And what would be wrong with the 80w90 GL4 they still offer?

Somebody mentioned something about the GL5 having more sulphur and phosphorous that is bad for the sychronizers. Any comments there?

lubecorp additives

i use an additive that works in all the oils. it basically gives your regular oil products synthetic charateristics and it's oil based, not silicone. they have used for 20 years up here in oil patch equipment. a one litre jug runs about $15. 00 and will do an entire truck,diff,trans,p/s,crankcase. they also make a fuel additive that will boost your cetane 5-8 points, eliminate water and crap from fuel system and you don't haveto worry about cold weather gel up. My mileage went from 18city to 22 and 26hwy to 36 measured. you can check them out at http://www.lubecorp.com/.

Amsoil tech says use the 80-90.

I ran the 75-90 since I bought the truck, with excellent results. The worry was, and you can do a search, is that a GL-5 rated lube, would eat the soft metals in the synchros if it got hot.

Amsoil claimed, that since it was rated Gl-2thru 5, it was safe.

Having mine apart several times, from breaking big parts, non oil related, ;) I can say they were right. The brass parts looked the same as parts coming out of factory lubed transmissions, but the wear on the gears(or lack of) looked better.

Very happy with the performance of the Series 2000 in the 4500, sorry to see it go.
