I've found an NV4500 I want to put behind a 93 12valve. Can this be done? And if it can what needs to be done. Thanks in advance for any help I can get. :)

Of course it can be done. We can do almost anything! Seriously, though, a lot of people do it when their Gutbag trannys crap out. Check out Quad 4x4 for a lot of good information.

Good luck, and you can be sire that when I find the money I'll be joining the NV crowd Oo.

NO KIDDING!!! I hate having to worry about my trannie all the time. As soon as I get the money, I'm going to do the same.

Don't forget, standard transmission has kits too.

I plan on getting mine from quad 4x4 because they are close to home so I can pick it up and avoid the freight charges.

There are dozens of places that can hook you up with an NV4500, so just look around, try a search of the forums (good luck, the search sucks, as many people will tell you), and hopefully there will be some more people chiming in here with their suggestions on who is best to contact. Then all you have to do is price shop for shipping charges.

Along the same lines as 12valver, say I come across a NV4500 from a donor truck or junk yard, is it the same 4500 that is behind a gasser pickup? Or do I need one from a Dodge Cummins? Once I have one in possesion as 12valver, is the next step to get the adapters and other parts from a vendor? What should one snag from the donor truck? Thanks Bill

If you buy a used NV4500 with unknown history, you might want

to check the fifth gear shaft before you install it. If you do a forum

search you will find that some of the earlier transmissions have

a problem with the nut backing off,if it isn't locked on or ,if the

shaft isn't fully splined.

adapter

:) Hey bud, you can get the adapter from www.advance adapters.com and the other things to complete the crossover. They have a book to tell you the swap instructions. I pulled the top off my 99 nv4500 and tail housing and put a solid nut on and staked it 6 times and locktighted also. Good luck. Tim

I changed to a NV4500 too in my 2WD.

*Had to make a rear mount bracket on the crossmember.

*Shorten the driveshaft (about 6"?).

*Make a new hole in floorboard for new shifter.

It came with a modified bell housing. My local, and trustworthy, shop took 11 hours and it was his 2nd one. The 1st one he did was from http://quad4x4.com/index.html and he thought it was a better kit and took a little less time.

My understanding that the early NV4500's had both a problem with the 5th gear nut, as mentioned, plus a marginal 1 1/4" diam input shaft. These problems were fixed by around 1998(?)which included changing to a 1 3/8" diam shaft. Someone please correct my details on this if I'm wrong.

Supposedly the rebuilt I bought is "upgraded" but I admit not pressing for all the specific details at the time (things were hectic for me at the time).
