The service manual calls for 4 quarts. So, I put 4 quarts in about 1 year ago and came up a little short so I bought 1 more quart. I may have spilled some putting it in. I have read of guys jacking the truck up on one side and squeezing more in by overfilling. I may try that sometime. Get the extra quart and if you spill it putting the gallon in you have more on hand.
Of course make sure you use the right oil. I used Castrol Syntork from Quad 4x4 or get it from the dealer. It has to be GL-4 low phosphore content or it will mess up syncros etc. Don't ask me how I know but I learned the hard way. I used Valvoline Synthetic GL-5 and transmission started shifting rough. I learned the phosphor content was too high and Had to drain and refill with Castrol.
mine takes five to get up to the fill hole. quad 4x4's website says the gassers hold four and the diesels hold five.
"Castrol Syntorq® LT 75w85w full synthetic gear oil is the only factory approved lubricant for NV4500 transmissions. Specifically formulated to provide consistent performance under the most severe operating conditions including extreme low temperatures. API Service GL-4 rated. Packaged in two quart bottles. Made in U. S. A NV4500 transmission oil capacity is 4 quarts for stock transmissions or 5 quarts for NV4500HD 4x4 transmissions used to replace the Getrag G360. "
GM parts dept have this oil to. Look on the tag on the fill hole, it will give you the part number. Check on the TDR forums and see what others have used with success. stay away from the Castrol on the shelf.
I know Standard Transmission recommends it. It's cheaper than the Syntorq.
I currently have 5 quarts in mine. I have not had any problems from it but no gains either. I bought a quart bottle pump made for lower units on outboards that came with an adapter on the hose to screw into the lower unit that exactly fits in the PTO cover bolt holes. I took the bottom one on both sides out to drain it and the top one on one side to put it back in. Amsoil sells a pump that actually fits the top of their bottles but I don't know if it comes with the adapter on the hose.
