transmission quick fix?

Changed the oil in my trans for the first time today at 82000 miles. Used the bottom pto cover bolt for a drain, noticeing there is alot of transmission below the level of this bolt. I don't think I got all the oil out of the transmission because when refilling it it did not take a whole gallon, had about 15 to 20 oz left. There is a nice looking boss on the end of the transmission that looks like if the drain were there it would drain the whole thing, go figure. Anybody else run into this?

If you filled it to the bottom of the fill plug you should be fine. When I changed mine at 30K, I actually removed both PTO plates and painted the rusting metal. DC was too cheap to pay NV to paint these I guess.

When I had the PTO plates off, I used paper towels (Scott blue ones) that absorb oil to clean the bottom of the casing.

Even then, I think the fill was just slightly less than 4 quarts.

I changed mine a few weeks ago at about 68k plus and decided to pull the PTO cover just to see how things looked in there. I could see that there was no way all the oil could come out so I used a suction gun and sucked it all out that way. I was able to get all 4 quarts in.

Ya, Ifilled the transmission to overflowing, When first got truck painted all the parts they didn't paint, d shaft, front end, transmission. My truck is white, But underneath the cab and bed it is semi-gloss primer gray. Weird huh? I'll change transmission oil again at 100k and get it all out, good thing I ordered 2 gals. Thanks

I noticed this when changing my fluid last month. I jacked up the the rear of the vehicle as far as it would go w/ my floor jack & got a lot more lube out of that transmission.

I always remove PTO cover, and as some one said jack up / or on two stagered 2x4's (about right to get the grease to flow forewards--blot out the bottom of the case. Last but not least-- I remove the 4 " magent (from speaker) that i attached to the out side of the PTO coverwhen new,(low cost item)wash of cover ,silly cone, and re install. Catches anything the factory might have missed And other than your lube sample from you lab will let you know if you might want to look deeper!
Works great on the rear end cover also.
Install in stages, the little one might get wise if both her stero speakers go out at the same time!!!!
