Anyone using Amsoil MTG or Redline MT-90 oil in the NV4500 trans both about $13 a qt? The castrol syntorq from the DC or GM dealer is $27 plus quad 4x4 38. 97 for 2QTS and shipping. I called standard trans but they had switched from syntorq to Amsoil MTG I want good oil but this is crazy. The Amsoil and the Redline both have a GL4 rating.

I've used the Amsoil. Bought it from ST when they started using it. No problems with shifting and with 50k oil changes I got my normal 100k out of a transmission before it went TU. On the bottle it claims it meets the specs for syntorq. Don't know anything about Redline. FYI, you need 4 quarts. Wish you were closer, I have 6 in the garage I won't need after my conversion.

I did some testing with the NV4500 in my 03 a few years ago. I was having some other problems so I found myself pulling it regularly. I was seeing bearing wear in as little as 2500 miles from both Redline MT90 and MTL. You'll never find either of those in my transmission again.

I have many miles on the Amsoil gear lube in my NV4500 and have had zero issues. it was in the truck from right after I bought it back in 99 with 13k on it. I used the Amsoil all the way up to 180k changing at regular intervals and had no issues with shifting of excessive wear at all. At 180k I had the seal between the transmission and transfer case fail and when we reinstalled the tranmission this time we used Scaheffer Oil's moly Based gear lube which is GL-5 rated. The truck shifts smoother than it ever has and also has been problem free. I have now 220k on it and between the 2 synthetic gear lubes I am still on the original transmission and it was only apart once internally and that was for the upgraded 5th gear nut... ... ... Andy

Thanks for the input on the oil. The truck has 95000 on it now and is used mostly for towing a 9000lb 5er and hauling a 2200 TC all over the country. I have never changed the oil but check it ever time I change engine oil it is still clear and does not smell burnt but its time as we will be leaving on a 12 to14000 mile trip this summer. I was in OR in 08 and had to have the rear seal changed and ask about the oil then and he said it still was in good shape I try to baby this thing on account of the 5th gear nut and so far had had no problems. Have to take care of them they are like buying gold now.

surfbeetle I read your article on upgraded nv4500. I noticed that some had changed to the g56 what is involved in the change. Is there a article on the tdr about it. My truck is all stock. club cab long bed. I have always worried about this 5th thing and carry a new nut with the set screw with me at all times. So far I haven't had a problem but try never to lug but the range from 4th to 5th is not good on these trans. When I have the 5th wheel I run about 62 mph or about 1800 rpm. The TC is no problem at 22-2300lb

I have always ran Amsoil in all of our trucks with very few problems. I always run an extra qt. of oil in the trans, I do servce intervals at 100k.

When I used amsoil the 2-3 shifting was noticably more notchy. I replaced it with Mopar syntorque from the dealer and the issue resolved. It shifts great when cold or hot now. I've spent so damn much money on this truck what was another $80. Just my experience.

What kind of oil is good for the differential? the last time I changed at 55k I used Valvoline 80w90 and additive from the dealer. If I went to full syn. would I have seal leakage problems. At 95k it is also time to change again.

I don't know the specifics for the conversion, but I would imagine that mounting points would need to be modified. The input shaft is probably different which would require a different clutch/flywheel/pressure plate combination (and starter spacer) and then your drive shaft length may be different as well. Also consider that your hydraulic clutch slave cylinder my need to be changed to accommodate the new trans.
