Hey guys I don't want to start a war here but I was wondering if there is and alternative to the Castrol Syntorque gear oil that is indicated on the side cover of my NV4500?I only ask because my rear end has Amsoil in it from the PO and I was going to change it,and thought maybe it was time to do the transmission as well. I was hoping I could just get the oils at the same time both from Amsoil. Also I can't seem to find the capacities of either the rear end or the NV4500. Could some one tell me what they (preferably in quarts)are?

Rear diff is 3. 5qts. IF you have a LSD, put two bottles of friction modifier in it; better to slip a little than not slip enough and eat the clutches.

NV4500 should be ok with a GL4 ONLY (not GL4/ GL5) oil. The phosphorus in the GL5 plates out under stress and heat, and eats the synchros. Not sure on capacity- think around 4qts- someone chime in who knows for sure.

Amsoil has been recommending the Series 2000 75w-90 since that transmission came out. I have been running it for about 150,000 miles.

Been inside it several times fixing pulling breakage, excellent condition.

Very happy with the performance.

I have to agree with sled puller. Amsoil is good stuff.

NOTE:

Just because the there is Amsoil in the rear doesn't mean you never have to change it. Even though that stuff costs like liquid Gold.

As the clutch plates wear that stuff stays in suspension and will eventualy work on your bearings and seals. No question in my mind that Amsoil is the first and best lubricant but you still need to get the crudd out of there.

Thanks EZGZ,

I know I need to replace the fluid in there. I have owned the truck a little more than a year now and the previous owner had put the amsoil in there about 6 months before I bought it from him. He didn't put many miles on it in the time since in was put inand when I bought but I still would like to replace italong with the transmission fluid. Just some preventative maintinence i guess.

NV 4500 lube

No war here. I have said this before. I use 85aw in my getrag. And they are notoriously bad aren't they? I check it on a 10k mile schedule and replace it if it starts to look discolored. My main truck is a 93 D350 and I don't pull heavy. You may need better.

I have an NV4500 from an fwd that I am building for a refit on my automatic OD 92 model. The previous owner had run it out of synthrol. Burned up the input shaft gears. Now the important fact here is "if you run it out of oil, it doesn't make much difference what WAS in it. " The synthetics are no doubt the best. Pay your money and take your choice. But don't forget to check it when you change the motor oil.
